Short break at the CapitalWas an ideal base for seeing the capital and surrounding areas. Small home made into B&B, I had the smallest room - bed, tv, kettle available - all you need really. Breakfast was nice, a good selection was available.

Thistle Guest House EdinburghI was locked out of my room when I reached Edinburgh, I had to call an emergency number to gain access! The TV didnt work. I couldnt actually secure by room door from the inside there was no handle just a yale which you had to try and pull towards you. I didnt manage to to close it when I was asleep!!! Im not sure how this room or the door would pass a fire inspection. I didn't stay the 3 nights because I didnt feel safe in the room. I would appreciate your comments.Jayne Hardaker

return to Edinburgh for Bagpipes Spares cant fault the service received , small but very clean tidy and friendly value for money staying in a capitol city is second to none i highly recommend this b&b. Local bus service very near to all parts of the city. Breakfast was included in cost on a self service basis eat as much as you like not hurried . (only draw back cooked breakfast not avaliable) but then again mostly every other thing available.

Thistle Guest House, Leith, EdinburghHandy for city centre (30 mins walk or frequent bus service) and nice quiet location opposite park. Good restaurants nearby (10 mins) on Leith harbour. Friendly owners and pleasant staff. The fire alarm went off at about 7.00am on our first morning and, as neither owners nor staff are resident, we had to wait outside for someone to come and turn it off. It was nice of the owners to offer us free breakfast in compensation for the disturbance - very fair of them. The only let-down was breakfast - help-yourself cereal, fruit juice and toast (cheap bread) was adequate but we didn't bother having any after the first morning, preferring to grab a snack once we'd walked into the city centre. Also, didn't realise that breakfast was not included in the price.

Thankfully we were only there for 3 nights. The double room should be a single, it was that small-no space for 2 people to move around. Clothes had to be hung from a rack on the wall which obscured the only mirror in the room. The mattress had metal edgings poking through and also had a big burn hole in it. The advertised crisp cotton sheet looked like it had already been used!! The towels were never changed. It had the tiniest shower room with a sink that was so small you could not wash in it and an extractor fan that sounded like a jet engine, it was a struggle to get dried after a shower, given there was no space. The room was on the ground floor looking out to a back yard where everyone seemed to gather for a smoke. It was located next to the recepion desk and breakfast room, so was very noisy in the morning. However the room was clean enough with ample tea/coffee facilities.

Cheap stopoverNeeded a cheap place to stay before an early flight to Paris to meet my partner. Cheap - yes, ideal for one person - yes. Other than that it was plain and simple. Except trying to check in. Despite making prior arrangements to check in late, I still had to wait 20 minutes for someone to arrive to let me in.

overnight stay whilst doin touristy things....my husband and myself stayed here just for the one night whislt visitin edinburgh...we both found it ok..and to be honest we were only usin it to sleep in as we planned on bein out and about all the time..the room was big enough for the 2 of us and had everythin we needed except shower gel...there was sachets of shampoo and sml bar of soap but no shower gel and we never took any as it says toiletries provided..could,v just been a sml blip..but it wasnt exactly a major problem...room was very clean and beddin good condition altho the white fluffy towels as described were no longer white nor exactly fluffy however the were acceptable...room did just need some decor freshend up..but for wat we paid for the room we were more than happy....breakfast was another story mind u...we were offered continental style for 5 pound which we took..the guy who checked us in said there would be a girl there in the mornin and we were just to go into the dinin room and help oursel basicaly...well would have if we could,v got in as the room was locked and we spent a good 5-10 mins lookin for someone at the office ended up back upstairs for a bit till we thot we heard someone but we couldnt have as we still had no joy..as we were about to just forget it the guy who checked us in arrived to start his shift and let us in and also apologised...the breakfast included cereal, bread for toast or croisants..there was also biscuits etc on offer...the bread wasnt exactly fresh ,one of the loafs was actualy mouldy..and the croisants were covered with a t-towel so we gave them a miss as not sure to freshness...we had the cereal and toast as we just opend a new loaf..was realy just a pitty about the food side as we probably would have been more than happy with what we got for our money, but if im honest this has probably put us off returnin to this guest house...a few wee tweeks here and there for the food storage and paint work freshend up and this wi

Standard single room booked, not the extra small one but even so it was VERY compact. Room had a sink and small tv with only 2 watchable channels on it. No curtains, just blinds which didn't stop the morning light getting in though I was up first thing anyway due to the traffic. The bed seemed clean enough (I daren't pry too much) though the mattress was obviously past it’s best and was very lumpy. General condition of the place is somewhat tired and not particularly clean with the whole place needing a good dusting however, it was only £22.50 a night so I guess you get what you pay for. On a plus point there was free on street parking available usually right outside the place.

Great hospitalityWe had a wonderful experience at Edinburgh Thistle Guest House. The rooms are clean and nice, the host was very helpful and there are many great places to visit within walking distance. Don't forget to spend some time at the Ocean Terminal if you end up staying here.

For the price, this hotel is a great base if you are single and want to venture into Edinburgh City within easy reach of all the major sights. Buses run right outside the guest house and by walking 5 minutes to Leith Walk, there are many buses at all times to get you into the city. A taxi late at night will cost around £7.00 from the city back to the guest house. As for the room, well, its very small and if you are tall or large, then this will cause a problem - there is hardly any room to do anything. The matteress was absolutely awful. They so need to change it as the springs really hurt when you sleep. The linen was very clean as was the room. The TV is of a poor quality, but works. All in all a great base for a few days. If that bed was changed then I'd stay again. The bathroom is shared and seems fine and clean. Staff were so friendly.
