We did a lot of sight seeing. The room was small but the loation was great overall. I mean we were only there to sleep in it anyway. It was probably the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in but for the price, you really couldn't beat it. I'm glad I found the room when I did and didn't have to worry about shelling out too much money because the weekend cost me enough already........

Great location for event at SF Civic Center, easy 4 block walk. Free off street parking was a real bonus. Would stay there again if opportunity arises.

First I need to say they did not pay me to write this! I decided to walk to the hotel from the BART station since the TSA kept my bag. (Good thing there was clean underwear in there!) I only had my laptop to lug. I was a farther walk than I expected, but even having to go past the "street people" (just like ANY downtown place) area it was a pleasurable stroll. When I came up on the Civic Center Inn, I was pleasantly surprised. I really did stand out as the cleanest building around. They let me pick a room and took my number to alert me when my bag arrived. They directed me to a place I was having a meeting and it was only 3 blocks from the hotel! I ate at the Thai place across the street, it was Very good! The buses were only 1 and 2 blocks away. The BART, trolley and cable cars were further but worth the walk to get the flavor of San Francisco. This was a business trip for me with some time left over to sight see. While I would not recommend the hotel as romantic lodging, I do Recommend the Civic Center Inn as a great deal and a great location for the traveler on a budget who appreciates the basic comforts at a fair cost. I will stay at the Civic Center Inn when I go back to San Francisco.

This hotel is located in a drug addicts and homeless people's st(Ellis St) so if you are staying here AVOID this street as much as you can. Take the upper streets. It's better.

A single woman can sleep securely and without worry. No swimming pool or microwaves available to the guests. The staff is very nice and caring about their guests and remember past guests. They are quick to accommodate people with disabilities and medical conditions. The office staff is very kind.

Good value, large clean room, huge bed, only 10 mins from union square. The negative side was the streets surrounding it were full of undesirable characters which made early mornings and late nights an uncomfortable walk home. The reception staff not exactly the most cheery of charactors.

Not sure what this place looked like before the renovation, but now it is a perfectly respectable place to stay. Decent sized room, clean bed sheets and towels. Bathroom was definitely redone to reflect the cleaner, newer look - clean tub and sparkling tile. In terms of getting to the BART, Powell St cable car, sightseeing or entertainment - the location was absolutely convenient. In terms of safety, especially during wee hours - questionable. A lot of homeless-looking people wander/hang out on Ellis west of Hyde, so one must be careful. We never got into trouble, but I imagine it happens. But then, it is a big city with all its good and bad - use your own judgement, really. Gentleman on the reception - pleasant and definitely helpful in giving suggestions on food, neighborhoods, clubs. All in all - nothing to complain about and good enough to come back if 5-star isn't an option.

We couldn't even stay here because we were harassed in the back parking lot by bums. They then proceeded to tell us we were in "crack alley" and to watch out- we were followed from our car, and yelled at. We tried talking to the lady at the office, but she said we couldn't get a refund, and we would just have to check out the next day. We ended up finding a new hotel for that night and the next, and only got partially reimbursed for this room we didn't stay in the next day.

The Hotel was very clean, even though it was more of a Motel type of hotel with outside room doors entry. It was secure even though it is located on the "tenderloin" area of San Francisco (not a good area) . It was only like 3/4 miles to Powell St and the round about of the cable cars. There were close by restaurant , although they were little and if you walk to fast you may miss them. Overall if was a good quality for the price.

The staff was very accommodating room clean & beds very comfortable, however, very small. It is not in the best part of the city, but close to venues that we were attending. As far as recommending it to others, I would tell it is clean and safe, and don't expect amenities.

I do not believe I would ever stay here again. Now that I think of it, I was in a hurry and should have done more research - so it is partly my fault. Not only was this location scary, people yelling in the alley way and people looking through the trash at night. The bed was not really comfortable and the pillows felt as if I was sleeping on a crumpled worn and thin blanket.

although the price was quite reasonable on a daily basis; the first night we had to change hotels, because some of the rooms had ac and others do not, and they gave us one without ac, and it was extremely warm. The hotel has had some remodeling, however, there is not a closet, nor any place to hang anything anywhere in the room, which i found unusual for a hotel. There is a small desk on which we had to put our things until we needed them, but it is better to have some place to hang things on hangers, etc. On our 2nd and 3rd nights, the hotel accomodated us with a room with ac, however, still no place to hang anything. Location in central San Francisco was convenient to everything, with plenty of free parking on site. I would choose this hotel only if others were not available at a like price.

Low price. Nowhere to hang clothing, not a hook in the place.

the hotel was good, staff was mildly friendly, and the room was nice but basic for the price. but BE AWARE OF THE NEIGHBOORHOOD. the block it sets on is mildly ok. but do not venture too far away in the late/early morning hours unless you have a badge and a gun on you. just a few blocks away from the hotel, there were at least a hundred...( not joking.... at least a hundred ) people hanging out on street corners doing nothing..... just waiting there to cause trouble......very bad neighboorhood.... i was almost ROBBED walking back to the hotel. i had to run the opposite direction and i finally caught up with a cab to take me back through them to get to the hotel. I will never stay there again until the police crack down on the neighboorhood. BE AWARE, STAY SAFE, STAY AWAY.

Civic Center Inn sucked! No AC. TV wasn't clear. Low water pressure in the shower. Sheets looked dirty(old looking stains). Would have rathered slept outside with all the homeless!

Good location, right price. Good location and cheap price. For short stay for the price.
