Great location, courteous staff and yummy free cookies.

I stayed here for 3 days for part conference/part vacation. The hotel is older but well-kept. Rooms are small and bathrooms even smaller but they are recently renovated. The staff is friendly and more than helpful! The location is close to plenty of shopping and public transportation. Would recommend.

What drew me to the Chancellor was that the hotel is completely non smoking! A few reviews I read complained about the small room and the lack of A/C but in my experience neither of these things were a problem. My first night I actually had to use the space heater provided, and even though San Francisco was warm the other days the over head fan and the nice breeze through the window were more than adequate to keep the room comfortable - even made it chilly at points. The room was small but not unbearably so. The large closet gives you tons of space to store luggage, shopping bags etc and makes up for the small room. The beds were extremely comfortable- I have trouble sleeping when I travel but the bed was so comfortable at the Chancellor that I slept well while staying there. The bathroom was a comfortable size and clean. I had more than enough space to store things and move around in the bathroom at the Chancellor. The staff was friendly and helpful! I am a sucker for good customer service...hats of to the staff at the chancellor! The hotel is also close to all the Union Square attractions and on the street car route. The wireless internet actually worked and it is secure within the hotel! I also appreciated the hotel's dedication to preserving the environment by encouraging guests to recycle and reuse in a nice way. All in all I had commendable stay at the Chancellor. I have no complaints about this hotel ( which is rare for me), and I would stay there again the next time I am in San Francisco. I have already recommended the Chancellor to several colleagues! A great value for money!

Location was excellent, in the middle of everything! A little noisy outside window.

The Chancellor is one of those old San Francisco hotels located in the Union Square area. It is close to everything. However, the hotel is now dated. There was no AC, the staff was rude. The bathroom was too small. Beds were also inconvenient. Parking is paid valet only so the relatively cheap room rate becomes not so cheap when you tack that on.

Random points about the Chancellor: -I read a lot of reviews for this hotel both from online travel and other websites specific to San Francisco, and the general impression that I got from the combination of all of the reviews ended up being accurate. Overall, it was a good stay. -it's right next to Union Square, which is a really bustling area full of world class shopping. Also, a street car stops right in front of the hotel, which is nice. -People complain about the small rooms, but the complaint is overrated. There is enough room for a small table and chairs, a desk, and the dress and television. The closets are walk-in and large, but the bathrooms are a little on the small end. The rooms are pretty small I guess, but it didn't affect our trip at all. -The service was not good, which is the only complaint that I have. We asked a woman at the "travel" desk for directions on how to get to Pier 33 via public transportation and she acted like we were inconveniencing her, and her directions were not clear (we had to look it up ourselves). This made me extremely angry and really soured our otherwise positive feelings of the stay. Also, the service at the restaurant was mediocre, the guy basically forgot about us for about 15 minutes. However, we had a few drinks at the small bar they have and the bartender was fantastic! -This review focuses on the negative, but in the end this is a hotel that I would stay at again which tells you all you need to know about my overall feelings on it. It's very nice and reasonably priced, the rooms are acceptable (the bed is extraordinarily comfortable!), and the location can't be beat.

Hotel is in a great location. Room was slightly small and not enough cool air at night.

The inexpensive Chancellor remains my favorite hotel in SF. A comfortable historic hotel that's been updated but retains its historic charm. It is not a 5-star hotel and does not claim to be. The rooms were quite adequate in size. Two people should have no problem with the space. Unless you plan on having lots of visitors sitting in your hotel room the rooms are fine. Overall, we had a lovely stay..!!!

The Chancellor is one of those old San Francisco hotels located in the Union Square area. It is close to everything. The hotel, however, is dated. There is one antiquated elevator that you may wait a long time for. The rooms are very small, bathrooms are tight. The heating system is old steam and there is no air conditioning. A basic needs hotel that has seen better days. Also parking is paid valet only so the relatively cheap room rate becomes not so cheap when you tack that on.

Good. Only one public computer. Everything was excellent for the price I paid for.

I stayed at the Chancellor Hotel for business. I chose it because of its proximity to a conference that I attended and that is was half the price of a neighboring hotel (online travel website has some great package deals). The Chancellor is an older hotel, so it has small elevators, narrowish hallways, and cozy rooms. I found the hotel to be clean, comfortable, with friendly staff, in a great location, and as I mentioned, a great value. The room was a bit small but fine for 1 of 2 people. The walk-in closet was huge and the bathtub was also quite large and great for a soak. They also offer a pillow "menu," which is nice if you like trying different things, as I do. One note, the first time I requested a pillow, it never showed. However, the next day when I again asked, it came w/in 10 minutes. BTW, they offer tea/coffee, fruit, & cookies 24/7 AND they offer free Wi-Fi - a big thumbs up! The restaurant was good - the food tasty, not overly inflated pricing, and average service (the waiter was not as attentive as I would have liked and the food took longer than I thought it should). There were a range of guests staying at the Chancellor - business people, families, and tourists (of all ages). I recommend the Chancellor for its value, location, basic amenities, and courteous staff.

This hotel was in the perfect location to get around SF. It had wireless internet in the room, which a lot of the hotel didn't. Only bad thing is that it didn't have air conditioning (which normally isn't an issue) but we were there when SF had abnormally warm weather.

The inexpensive Chancellor remains my favorite hotel in SF. While the rooms are small, and the decor old-fashioned, this place has amenities missing from many of the trendy "high-end" places I've stayed in the past. The beds are luxurious, and the hotel itself is quiet (particularly if you ask for a room that does not overlook the streetcar). My 8th floor room (with walk-in dressingroom/closet!) was so quiet I couldn't believe I was staying in a city. The bathrooms are immaculate, with big bathtubs and showers with excellent water pressure. The breakfasts in the restaurant downstairs are extremely affordable, and include Southern style specialities and an amazing brioche French toast. The hotel staff are friendly and obviously experienced in the hospitality field. There is always coffee and hot water for tea in the lobby (with real milk) and cookies and popcorn in the afternoon/evening. And there's a little library (take one, leave one) on the second floor. They're great about checking bags before and after your stay, arranging shuttle transportation, and getting you a cab. I couldn't ask for more.

Very close to best part of downtown and inexpensive. Older hotel, but not that much of a drawback. An excellent choice for people who are interested in economy, cleanliness, and nearness to shopping, restaurants and theater.

Two people should have no problem with the space. Unless you plan on having lots of visitors sitting in your hotel room the rooms are fine. The bathrooms also are adequate in size, and the tub is huge. The walk-in closet is a nice feature, allowing you to store your baggage out of sight. The rooms were a bit skimpy on drawer space for your clothes, however (3 drawers plus a drawer in each bedside stand.) The room was very quiet (our room was on the side of the building). The 42" plasma TV worked fine, as did the free WIFI. The location cannot be beat. Public transportation is easily accessible and a car is not necessary. If you need a car, cabs are readily available, or car rental places are literally across the street. We found it easy to get to the airport via BART (which is about 3 blocks away.) You will see many people around Union Square walking with their luggage (on wheels) because they are either leaving or arriving via public transport. The staff was simply great. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We asked for directions, advice, etc.-- 5 star service. Very reasonably priced; would absolutely stay again. Why pay for 5Star when 4Star is perfectly fine?

Quaint yet modern, unexpected amenities, great bar. Food unavailable in hotel restaurant after 2:30pm. Old-school vintage San Francisco architecture but remodeled for the modern eye. Unexpected personal touches, i.e. bedding upgrades, free hot coffee in the lobby 24/7, spa services, deep tubs. Not a bad drink to be had in the bar and good food presentation in the restaurant.

Excellent location. Poor tourist help. Rooms small but nice. Location great for catching trolley; only a few blocks to BART. Have free coffee available at all times in lobby.

They combined older style with modern. The size of the room was a little small. The people in the reservation department were very helpful.
