Description:
Located just two and one half blocks from the beach, the beloved Chalfonte stretches an entire city block, boasting an expansive wrap-around porch lined with rocking chairs from which you can enjoy a nice book or sip a cool cocktail from the famous King Edward Bar. Guests of the hotel are also preview to one of the most fantastic views in the city from our third floor cupola. The Chalfonte Hotel is considered the oldest operating hotel on the East Coast. Each guest room is unique in furnishings and design providing a summer cottage feel. Rooms are cooled by modified air conditioning and ceiling fans. Our legendary Magnolia Room restaurant serves a sumptuous buffet breakfast from 8:30AM to 10:00AM and a fixed price four-course dinner from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. Known for its southern-style cuisine, the Magnolia Room is host to family style dining at its best. The King Edward Bar is open from 5:00PM to 1:00AM and is known as Cape May's best kept secret. Guests enjoy a nice wine and beer selection as well as signature cocktails. Friday, Saturday and Sunday feature a Still Life of Cheese from 5:00PM to 8PM. A truly gourmet experience of select imported cheeses and olives, all to experience and enjoy with our compliments. The Chalfonte is a rich study of community and tradition, featuring nightly entertainment and monthly art exhibits. It is more than a typical hotel, the Chalfonte is a cultural experience.

Close enough to everything such as restaurants, shops, beach, etc. Cape May is a lovely town and the Chalfonte made it most enjoyable.

Room on third floor and had to carry bags, no phone, no TV and a shared bathroom with no sink to wash your hands.

The Chalfonte is not the place for everyone -- thankfully! If you are seeking well appointed, metropolitan rooms with all the bells and whistles -- forget the Chalfonte -- Cape May probably isn't for you either. Try Avalon! I never missed the absence of a television or phone in my room. The Chalfonte is about solitude. You come here to ride the rockers that grace the front porch. If you must watch TV it is available in the common areas. I admittedly enjoyed hearing some of the guests in the TV room watching America's Favorite Past-time. And you know your cell phone is never more than 3-feet away at any time. So, who needs a phone in the room? (Tip: you can pick up Internet service from the porch. Don't tell!) I visited in August and September. It was hot yet I was comfortable with just the ceiling fans and ocean breezes. I was concern about the shared bath arrangement but I never had trouble finding a free bath or shower. And if you prefer not to share the bath, rent a room with a private bath. I found the staff charming, helpful and accommodating. It impressed me that most of them knew me by name after our first meeting. The Magnolia Room may not be 5-star dining but it is a good value and the wait-staff friendly and attentive. Finally, I find the Chalfonte inspirational. The first week I spent there was to work on my book. It was perfect -- plenty of quiet hideaways. I was also driven to pull out my camera. If I were a painter, I would have pulled out my easel. But I'm not so I settled for enjoying the art exhibits. So, if you are looking for a getaway reminiscent of a Victorian seaside escape, the Chalfonte is it.

As my husband and I were sitting on the porch in our rocking chairs , drinking a glass of wine , we heard some people on a carriage tour discussing our hotel was haunted .. so I immediatley wanted to take the tour and find out ... and we did , the care taker from long ago is the so called ghost ,, we had never seen any ghosts but were curious as to why we had a work ladder out side our window??? hmmm for the care taker? any way its very old buliding which reminds me of my granmothers home ,, its very cute ,, its got charm and the staff are lovely ... they have a bar inside the building and a resturaunt has good food . the room was simple and clean , a liitle crooked was the bed because the floors are tilted ... but other wise cozy .. its not overdone , its very liveable and we stayed for a few nights ... I would visit again , and I have stayed in many b and b 's in Marthas Vineyard and In N.C this could feel like a home.

The location to the beach was great. Also to move around the city to different attractions was good. The rooms could have been more private. The people running the hotel were the greatest. The children were pleased with the location and the pictures beauty of the hotel. It was very charming.

I found this Hotel-- a Guest House actually--on an online travel website. It wasn't rated, but I needed a place for a spur of the moment beach weekend, and took a chance. I recommend the hotel for single person because there is plenty of space to be alone or around others. There is a small bar, and library, TV room, dinning room. Breakfast was included. My room was sweet and comfortable.I had a super duper weekend in Cape May. I have to add -- the staff at this place were so friendly and helpful. Highly recommend it.

The atmosphere was quaint and almost as if you stepped back in time. No air conditioning, tv or phone...Entertainment was fun two shows happening on a Sunday eve along with wine and cheese party. Cheese party complimentary. Room was very uncomfortable...It was a steamy hot August evening on the third floor of this old, very grand hotel. Hard to breathe... and because we had to leave the door open for circulation it was very loud in the hallway. Overall it was a fun stay. We didn't spend to much time in the room. The town of Cape May is beautiful and a lot to keep anyone occupied.

Location. Knowledge of staff. Bed covers, bathrooms. This was a very bad experience. Hate to say the worst. Bed covers were torn. Door handles are loose. If you pull the door, the knob comes off. Two common bath rooms for about 20 or 30 rooms. Front door of the room has a lock, but the back door, simply opens if you simply push hard enough.

Those of you looking for a hotel that has anything after 1920 should look elsewhere. This place is like stepping through a time machine. For someone looking for an escape from a digital society, I found this place pure heaven. There's no air con, but it's breezy and comfortable. There are no televisions and it feels like you're sleeping in Anne of Green Gables' bedroom, but it's comfortable and clean and three blocks from the ocean. There is an antique charm about this building and even a little eeriness, but it's a comforting sort of eeriness. The wraparound porch with the rocking chairs is wonderful, especially on a rainy summer night. Will definitely consider it again!

Clean, attractive, pleasant, friendly courteous staff, lovely veranda with rocking chairs. No air conditioning. Area is very hot & humid in summer /very difficult to sleep at night. Very attractive old wooden hotel. Attractive, clean rooms, public areas and dining room. Pleasant courteous staff. No air conditioning made it difficult to sleep in the hot humid weather. Also, most rooms have shared bathroom facilities.
