The hotel is located in the historical town of Amarante , only 60 kilometres from Porto . The Casa da Calcada has been built in the 16th century, to become one of the palaces for the count of Redondo . Amarante is one of the most important examples of the romantic archichitecture in Portugal with a very well preserved historical and monumental area.

The hotel is indeed an unique charming property, since 2003 member of the Relaux and Chateaux chain . The city of Amarante is only 60 kilometres away from Porto. The Northern of Portugal is becoming a must for the travellers seeking for peaceful , unique destinations, away from mass tourism, attracted by the beautiful landscape, history, culture and off course wining (Porto wine) and dining experiences.

The building kept the original baroque style with some neo- classical elements .
