Description:
The Carolina Inn combines the graciousness and sophistication of a historic, southern inn with the intimacy and privacy of a secluded retreat. With 184 luxuriously appointed guestrooms and suites, over 13,000 square feet of unique, historic meeting and event space, southern colonial architecture, exquisite landscaping, and superb culinary service, this award-winning inn is the perfect choice for the discriminating business and leisure. Built in 1924 by John Sprunt Hill-distinguished alumnus, successful businessman and University trustee-the inn's original concept was "to provide for the special wants and comforts of the University alumni? and University visitors". In 1935, Hill donated the Inn to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the stipulation that after meeting expenses, profits from the Inn were to be used for "the maintenance and support of the University library, and especially for the support of the collection of books and papers known as the North Carolina Collection". Mr. Hill's wishes are still carried out today as the Inn returns its profits to the University to support the University library. A bronze plaque commemorating Mr. Hill's donation is located at the front desk of the Inn and quite simply states "This generous gift affords a cheerful Inn for visitors, a town hall for the state, and a home for returning sons and daughters of alma mater" Architect Arthur C. Nash of New York conceived the "southern colonial style" used in the original design of the Inn. The most striking elements are the two-story portico facing Cameron Avenue, and the glazed cupola that crowns the building; both were copied from G eorge Washington's home in Mount Vernon, Virginia. Today, The Carolina Inn more resembles a huge residential estate than a commercial property. The architectural design, intimate courtyards and lush landscaping all serve to give guests a sense of serenity and privacy. The rich color scheme, antiques and plush furniture call forth images of a lavish private residence.

The grounds of the Carolina Inn are beautiful... The rooms are nice, a little on the small side, but the service more than makes up for the lack of space. If you are looking for a beautiful place to stay with customer service second to none, than The Carolina Inn is the place.

Unlike the other reviewer, I had only excellent and considerate service from all of the people I interacted with at the Carolina Inn. The food is very good, the bed was very comfortable, and it was nice and quiet. It was very nice for someone whose main interests were elsewhere - it's no resort, but it was an excellent place to sleep. It's not the kind of hotel where you can spend the entire day and not be bored, but it's right in the middle of the UNC campus and two minutes walk from Franklin St., which is a very good place to spend time. If you have business, especially on the campus, it's a great hotel. It's a little pricy - the rooms are comfortable and clean, but not spectacular - but quite good.

This is a great place. I was in town with my husband for interviewing, and it was a wonderful location (close to campus and the hospital, and close to restaurants/etc. on Franklin st.) and had comfortable rooms with a pleasant atmosphere. All the employees were very warm and low-key and all the christmas decorations and displays were great. Everyone I talked to seemed very impressed that we were staying there, but it really isn't that expensive! Can't say enough good things about it, very clean, always parking available. Breakfast in the restaurant was great (pancakes were divine) and reasonably priced (less than 10 dollars for most items) but we did notice that lunch/dinner was quite expensive.

Very charming and the staff was excellent and attentive. I had the room with a friend and they only had one queen size bed in the room. We had to pay an extra $20 for an additional queen bed. Overall, I loved this place...it's charm and the staff was excellent. No extra fees for internet connection, very clean and the best were very comfortable. Parking, however, was an additional $10 for the night, whether it was valet or self park.

Beautiful and comfortable. This historic Inn never fails to please. The decor is always updated in the very best Southern decor. Stepping into your room is like stepping back in time to a gorgeous Plantation home. The service is courteous, prompt and noninvasive. I travel extensively and would compare The Carolina Inn to the finest hotels in which I have stayed worldwide. It never disappoints.

Friendly, helpful, professional staff. Beautiful hotel & grounds. Luxurious! Parking a bit of a problem because several weddings taking place during our stay. Ten dollar/day parking fee. One of the most beautiful hotels we've experienced. The staff epitomizes southern grace. We are trying to come up with an excuse to go back and spend several days there.

It is a beautiful historic hotel. Wonderful Staff. Nicely appointed. Very small room. Only one robe, and a double bed. No Pool. A beautiful historic hotel located adjacent to the University of North Carolina. Neighborhood is safe and comfortable. Hotel is nicely appointed, with courteous and helpful staff. On the down side the room was very small, there was only one robe in the close, and the bed was a double. The only fitness facility on site is a small cardio room. No pools or hot tubs.
