I had my booking done by my company and was expecting a cheap backpackers hotel. But even so I was surprised for bad. The rooms looked old, dirty and small. The double bed was small and with my 1,81m my feet were out. My wife got bitten by fleas a dozen times. We had to ask for towells, the bathrooms were dirty all the time and they only change sheets when requested. There was no pillowcases and we used our t-shirts. No curtain. Just a small blind that didn't prevent light to come in. Won't go back for sure!

Worst place ever! The room they gave me had termites, ants, roaches, and flies all over the room and bathroom! The toilet and shower were dark brown. It is very obvious that they hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. The room smelled like mold. The place refused to give me a refund. I am still fighting to get my money back now. Don't be fooled by the nice photos that they posted online! I researched thoroughly all of the different hostels in New York, and chose this one because of the user reviews and photos that were posted online. Stay away from this place! You will regret that you ever came here!! They are rude liars (especially the manager) who do false advertising!!

Disgusting bedbugs, noisy, unclean bathrooms. Black mold, gross. A welfare hotel. Stay at the real hostel on 102nd and Amsterdam. Never pay cash to stay in a place. You can't get a refund if there is a problem.

After my plane landed I had a last minute change in my plans and called ahead to the Candy Hostel. They held my reservation until I arrived at 11:30pm and I ended up with a private room when I had booked a dormitory bed. The place was very clean and the bathrooms were newly remodeled, secure and SPOTLESS. This place is just a few blocks from Central Park and there are 24 hr grocery, etc around the corner. I see other comments about unsafe neighborhood, but I disagree. The cars parked on the street were: Mercedes, Mercedes, Land Rover, Range Rover, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc, etc. Overall perfect place for a couple days of sightseeing.

Clean, with beds made often. Bathrooms are small and there are only two per floor, but they too were quite clean. The doors to the rooms were very loud and squeaky! The rooms were air conditioned and my overall experience was enjoyable. The hostel is in a safe area, and close to the red line station. I would definitely stay here again!

This time, Candy hostel had me stay in their "third building", quite obviously another hostel, Hostel Fresh. My room was twice the size of last time, even had a dresser and a closet--however, I only had ONE electrical socket, compared to the, like, FOUR I had in the 6x8 room. Of course, yet again, there's no view--unless you count looking at fifty other people's bedroom windows and large brick walls. All in all, it's yet again what I said I wanted and what I paid for, so I'm not complaining.

Didn't like this place at all. Bad service, and very small rooms. I placed an order for a 1BR - 1 twin bed. But all i got was a 4p. room, with 3 strangers. There is a constant smell in the hostel. And it is very noisy! I would never recommend this hostel!

This was my first trip to NY and my first time staying at a hostel. I was quite pleased with my whole experience. The room was kept clean as well as the bathrooms. The hostel was very close to the subway which provided easy access to all the sites I wanted to see. Overall, I was very pleased and I would consider staying there again on my next trip to NY.

I didn't get to sleep because I snore. The occupant of the bed below me would shake the bed until I woke. As a result neither he nor I slept that night. If I didn't snore then I may have slept in and missed my morning trane. Other than the rude roomates the place was clean, quiet and comfortable. I felt safe and well cared for.

I stayed with my girlfriend, we couldn't find anywhee else for memorial day weekend at a low price. It seemed a little too expensive but the location is great. The rooms were clean. The bathrooms you have to share, they were clean but sometimes people would leave their dump in the toilet and clogg it. Which was gross. IF your a student and just need a place to sleep at night and shower in the morning its great. If your trying to have a nice hotel style room and service, stay somewhere else.

The Candy Hostel stood out in price. The room had 2 bunk beds. The room was okay, my only disappointment was that there was no closet. The shared bathroom was kept clean. A plus is the location - Upper West Side and I like the opportunity I had to meet people across the world. My roommates were great. And of course the price is too, if you don;t have to be grand, the Candy is for you. The downside is that slow elevator. I was better off taking the stairs - even though I was on the 5th floor. And of course sharing a bathroom with a section of the floor presented its challenges. FYI Most of the stores are on Broadway. Now the main entrance to Candy is not on 95th Street, it's actually on 94th street, so if taking a cab there, let the cab driver know.

The location is good, nearby central park and natural history museum. But the hearer in room is too hot.

After seeing the room (very sparse indeed, no hangers, nowhere to hang or put our coats and other clothing) I asked the desk clerk for a room with my own bathroom. He said nothing was available and did not offer to put me on a waiting list, etc. if one did come up the next day. I also asked for an extra pillow, to which he replied, There aren't any extra pillows. The next day I told the girl that I really needed a room with a bathroom. She immediately checked the computer, found me a room within minutes and an extra pillow, to boot!! What a difference in customer service. Although I would not return to that hotel again, I did appreciate her help and it made the next two days' stay a lot more pleasant. I have travelled extensively throughout the United States and would rate this as the worst one I have encountered in the last 6 years.

'Do not stay here at all'' As me and my wife entered the building from the back side we walked threw a run down apartment building to get to the front of the hotel as me and my wife exited the elavator to the hotel we heard a loud sweeking noise witch I thought was a bird but as we walked futher we came upon a huge RAT that didnt even run from us it continued eating its dinner as if we werent there, after we cheecked in we walked into a extremlly small room that was about the size of a king size bed we were so dissapointed we went back to the front desk and told them we didnt wont the room we ended up leaveing the hotel (oh' I forgot to mention that the rooms dont have a bathroom),very nasty lil place that I wouldnt recommend to my enemies.

I didn't know what to expect for such a bargain rate in Manhattan, but I was in no way disappointed. The Upper West Side location is convenient, near the 96th Street subway station. The room was small, but perfectly clean enough. There are no private bathrooms, but the two shared bathrooms on my floor were quite clean (and cleaned frequently) and were accessible. All in all, if you want to stay in the city and spend as little as possible, this is about as good as it gets.

The hotel location was the best of this hotel, it was easy to access to the main attractions in NYC. However, the rudeness of the staff and the service provided were horrible. First of all, the person in the front desk was asking to see my passport when I already gave her my license ID, which she say was necessary for check in. (Thank God I brought my passport with me). I am not even travelling internationally and my passport was required. Then at night, I was very cold because there was only a very thin blanket to cover with. In addition, the keep house service does not exist in this hotel, not towel changes or cleaning of the room. And lastly, the bathroom is located outside your room and need to be shared with for or five other rooms which makes it a very long wait and uncleanness. If I knew this, I would n't stay in this hotel.

It was a HOSTEL. Dingy, poor service, altogether a big let down.

This hotel was located in an unsafe neihborhood. There were dark places to walk through even in the hotel and I noticed people following us. We were lucky not to get mugged! Also, there is no private bathroom. You must share. Do not chose this place to stay.

This place is very run down. They say its new but I would guess just new paint. The beds and rooms are nasty!!
