The short version: This is a good buy. For less than $100 U.S. dollars a night, you can't beat the location. And while there's nothing standout/special about the hotel... there's nothing wrong if you're traveling on a budget. Of course, if you have a lot more to spend and/or want a nice hotel, then this is not for you. The details: The location of the hotel is incredible!-- It is directly across from the beach (center of Copacabana) and 2 blocks from Rua Nossa Senhora do Copacabana-- a street where you can find shopping, grocery, a movie theater, and bus lines to Ipanema, Lagoa, Leblon, and more. If you pay for the deluxe you get to face the ocean. This was great to see what was happening, but I could also hear street noise on the weekend if I left the window open. I had a friend who stayed on the interior of the building (standard) who said she had a view of a patio. Nothing worth looking at, but fine. The hotel includes breakfast (as do many of Rio's hotels). I really liked the assortment of fresh fruit and breads. They also had ham, sausage, eggs, and pao de queijo (bread with cheese in it). 3 types of fruit juice each day, coffee, and tea were also provided. It's all you can eat from 6am-10am. I didn't eat inside the hotel (other than for breakfast). I adored the restaraunt directly out front. Wonderful service!!! Good food! There are also mini churrasco's down the road that are very affordable and also good. The hotel is old. I felt like it was reasonably cleaned-- but when a building is old an worn out it just doesn't look the same as a new hotel. I felt more like I was staying in an older apartment than a hotel-- there was some stained tiles in the shower, the floor boards were very worn down and dusty looking (but not actually dusty), there was no alarm clock, the bed was very simple, etc. For me, this was all fine. I paid so little for this hotel (less than $100 US dollars per night) and used it to sleep and shower. And... I had friends that stayed at other

The reception area and b breakfast room. The bedroom was very shabby and basic. It was very deceiving, the lobby looked nice, but when I entered the room I was very disappointed. The bedrooms need updating, and the carpet on the corridors need to be changed.

Location, friendly, helpful, etc. All the beds in Rio seemed uncomfortable. Not just them. Great value for the money. Great staff. Never settle for first price on any taxi ride.

We were promised a reimbursement from the hotel for having to pay for the taxi from the airport, since they said that their shuttle was out, it cost us over 45 and they then refused to pay it-cheap and not helpful at all!

We arrived at the hotel very early, about 7 a.m., and of course no rooms were available then. However the desk clerk invited us to enjoy the breakfast buffet at no charge. The buffet includes virtually anything you would want. The staff were very friendly and helpful. This hotel is also located just across the street from Copacabana beach!

The price seemed good because the location was great. The a/c didn't work and the bath tub was stained and the bath tub curtain had a lot of mildew. The location was great. The room was very quiet. The price was cheap compared to other hotels. The staff was friendly but non responsive to my complaint about the a/c not working in my room. The bath tub was badly stained and the bath tub curtain had a lot of mildew. The sheets on the bed were so thin that I could see the mattress through the sheets.

The location is central in Copacabana Beach and on the boardwalk. Aside from that, this hotel has nothing to offer. I am sure there are worse in the City, but I wouldn't be surprised if this hotel were competing for last.

The staff was very helpful and accommodating - and a great breakfast. It has seen its better days - A little bit of a walk from attractions. If you are looking for a hotel to stay in during your visit, I highly recommend the California. It's not the Ritz, but it's not the pits, either. The rooms are not fancy - but who goes to Rio for the hotel room? I enjoyed my entire stay, although the phone calls were pretty pricey.

The rooms were from the 1940's, the A/C barely worked and even went out for 1 1/2 days and the staff lied about it being fixed three different times. Other than it being on the beach, there is nothing redeeming about this place and will not stay again. But Rio is great....
