This was a great cabana for adventurous travelers looking for good surf and low price. If a tropical resort similar to Atlantis Bahamas is what you seek, run the other way. As a young guy interested in good surf, I didn't mind going back to a cabana with less than appealing linens and no signs of any house keeping whatsoever- oh, and most rooms were without AC in a part of Costa Rica that has the climate of a humid & hot rain forest. If you aren't scared away by the above, then, in all honesty, Cabinas las Arenas is a good value and a good time.

The hotel on the website depicted a beautiful hotel with all these amenities, like a pool, cable tv, and air-conditioning but when we got there it was the biggest dump. There were no amenities, the place was dirty it looked like it hadn't been clean in years. No a/c, no pool, no tv and get this no toiletries or towels. We left after that first night and had to pay to stay at another hotel. The customer service was awful and I don't know how they are still in business.

The surroundings are beautiful and relaxing; the people friendly and warm. The rooms, however, are very spartan; cold showers, no closet, no soap, no towels. The linens could use updating as well. Overall a good time- definitely worth the price. The restaurant next to the 'hotel' was great- friendly service, excellent food.

Glad you wrote; been trying to contact your since we returned from Costa Rica. Our experience with hotel, although the staff was understanding, was VERY unsatisfactory. I had sought on the web, thought I had found, then booked (thru Orbitz) a nice quiet place on the beach where my wife and I could enjoy several days. The ad on Las Arenas seemed right. But when we arrived, the first thing the "Asst Manager" said was "Man, this place isn't for you!" (My wife and I are in early 60s.) It was just another seedy surfer hangout; dark, noisy rooms filled with bunks, no pool (not even deck chairs for the beach). I have taken several pictures which I will share if given a chance. The clerk said he understood (though NO REFUND) and recommended a number of better-suited places, which we took advantage of (interesting that the price was about the same.) We're not happy with your research...and expect a refund or at least a voucher toward a future Orbitz purchase. Come on; you can do better! Paul Johnson

The hotel is located on a black sand beach. We had an ocean view room with a small fridge, a small cable TV and AC. We use AC almost all the time, it was hot. The room is very simple. The bathroom has an electric shower head that provides some warm water. If you ask for towels, you get them. No maid service that was OK with us. I don't like anyone in my room. The manager was very helpfull. People are very friendly there but not everyone speaks English. It would help to know Spanish but you definetely can get without it. There is a restaurant on the property and another one a few minutes walk. There are also pizzeria, an Internet cafe (about $2 to use a computer for an hour), a tour place and a small grocery store nearby. Food was very good and reasonably priced, about $6 lunch and $12 dinner, a whole plate. All places including buses accept dollars but we'll give you change in colones(Costa Rica's money). $1 is about 500 colones. We felt safe there, still watch you stuff. Somebody stole my son's shoes when we visited the Manuel Antonio National park beach. The park is on a white sand beach and for a nominal fee you can get in a protected rainforest to see monkeys and other animals. We didn't see any monkey. Also the park is closed on Mondays. The tour costs $75+ but two buses to get there only $5 both way. Tours are expensive, specify all details such as pick up and return to the hotel. We had a tour provided by ATX and they charge us $10 for bringing back without even informing us before the ride.

Make sure you lock up everything of value, although there were no thefts at this hotel...there was plenty of thefts everywhere in Jaco and Playa hermosa. The manager, is very hospitable and very friendly. Great place to go and surf, rooms only have the bare essentials so bring a towell and be prepared to spend a lot of time in the water. Staff was awesome!

The staff was very friendly, which compensated for the discomfort of the living quarters. The hot water was not working & it did not get fixed for 2 days. I had to pack & unpack 5 times when I was offered to move to a new room but it never happened. I was disappointed that a reasonable adjustment was not offered for the inconvenience. The room was never cleaned even after I made a request. Ask for towels, no soap or shampoo is provided. Guests were very loud (along with the owner who had joined them) hanging out in the hallway. It is common sense to not have a social gathering disturbing others outside of their door. There were no closets & only 2 hooks. one small mirror in the bathroom & one electric outlet. Location was perfect with bus stop outside & some major attractions were conveniently within walking distance. The beach was clean & beautiful. Restaurants served good food & the backyard hotel offered a very good social atmosphere. There was trash everywhere (but that is just Costa Rica in general). People don't know how to use trash cans. The area was safe & friendly overall. I would not mind returning because it wasn't horrible but there were very economical hotels / cabanas next door which offered much higher level accomodations & upgrades. You will be fine if your expectations are low.
