Me and my mother booked a two night stay at Bowen House paying a deposit of £65 which was immediately debited from my mothers account expecting to pay another £65 on arrival. Based on the excellent reviews we were anticipating an excellent stay. However this was not the case. After a 1 hour and 30 minute journey from Oldham we arrived in York. However we could not find the exact location of Bowen House and therefore rang the guest house for directions. After numerous phone calls we got no answer with the phone constantly going to answer phone. Eventually after directions from helpful locals we arrived at Bowen House to find the hotel completely empty. We rang the doorbell - no answer, called the only contact number supplied - no answer, asked the next door neighbor for information - he knew nothing. The whole guest house looked empty with no sign of life, it would seem we have been conned. Consequently we had to leave York with no where to stay and our whole weekend away was ruined. We are still yet to receive any sort of explanation, apology or refund from Bowen House. I URGE ANYONE CONSIDERING PAYING ANY MONEY TO STAY IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT TO THINK AGAIN!!

We arrived late so went straight to the room. We were on the third floor. The room was clean and tidy. Very friendly with a good breakfast.

Reasonable, friendly hotelWe stayed for one night over May Bank Holiday weekend. The overwhelming aspect of the stay was how friendly the staff were. From the initial greeting, where we were welcomed in to the house with a brief introduction (not too dismissive, not too oppressive), to their willingness to hold onto our bags for a few hours after we had checked out, the staff were charming. The room itself was neat and tidy, although a little cramped (there was a lot of furniture). Nevertheless it was comfortable and one could relax there. The location was slightly further than out than some other guest houses, but still within ten minutes of the city centre by foot (about 25 minutes from the railway station), if you are fairly mobile. The breakfast was lovely, with plenty of variety even for my partner who is a vegetarian.Overall, I would rate it above average.

We stayed for 2 nights in a double en suite room and it was wonderful, very clean and spacious, with the most comfortable bed we have slept in outside of our own. The hosts were very friendly and the cooked breakfast was excellent. We have truly found a hidden gem here and will definitely be back ...... sooner rather than later !

Bowen Guest HouseExcellent choice for us. Wanted to park the car and not move it for two days. A short walk to the city. We explored York by foot and by open top bus and he made me climb the tower of York Minster !!! Loved the shopping too. Lisa was a superb host and our room was small but appropriate for our needs short term. Would happily recommend The Bowen Guest House to anyone.

ReviewThe couple that run this house are very welcoming and freindly. The breakfast was lovely but we were disappioned with the size of the first floor front bedroom and it was very noise from the constant traffic.

Extremely well run and clean accommodiation with excellent breakfast. Our only negative comment was that, due to our late booking, the room available was twin bedded with separate bathroom on lower landing probably more suited to two single people rather than mid-age couple. The information available on the room when booking did not highlight this and if it had done may have influenced decision to stay unless double room accommodation had been available..

The lady who runs this B & B is lvely and the food was excellent. As a veggie it is often a let down in the morning to be confronted, yet again, with beans on toast. Here, there was a range of veggie options including soya products. The only issue we had was with the size of room which was very small and as was the atic room had a slanting ceiling and my husband kept banging his head.

We have just returned from a 5 day break in York staying at the Bowen Guest House. We both liked the location , only 5 minutes to the minster. The room we were allocated on arrival was very small but nice and very clean. On our 3rd morning we were asked if we would like to move across the hall to a bigger room which we did and this was a much more spacious. The full English breakfast was absolutely delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We would stay here again and strongly recommend this guest house to others.

our room was very clean andwell presented but incredibly tiny, we had to duck to avoid the sloping ceiling getting in and out of bed and we were very cramped for space. nice decor and lovely breakfast though!

Very friendly, nice room and good position near river and close to York Minster. My only negative points are that although parking is available it is very tight. Also, this venue is not very good for people requiring an early breakfast.

The Guest House is lovely, the staff are really laid back and friendly and the breakfast is delicious. Do be aware that the rooms are quite small, it was a tight squeeze in the double en-suite with a travel cot.

Instructions from your site very diffiicult to follow had to ring guest house said we would never got there following the instructions! Friendly welcome ,room clean , left overnight bag and went into York .Great location short walk to city centre. On returning late evening and closer inspection bathroom had large damp patch and was cold as radiator needed bleeding and was only hot at bottom corner! Very dissapointed for a 4star. Breakfast was lovely as was lady who served it. Would not return as we feel 4 star should reflect better quality rooms and bathrooms without off putting damp patch.

Nobodys fault but my wife was ill when we were there (norovirus diagnosed) and we felt out on a limb. The lady that runs it went away after showing us to our room. Rang bell no one answered decided to have a walk into York. Got back tea time still no one there. Then we found TV did not work ! Wife took to bed and I had to just sit there. Breakfast lovely even though wife could not manage much rang bell as leaving and the lady who served breakfast came out we asked to see owners and she said not here. We told her about TV. When we got back no answer to bell yet again rang a mobile number of lady owner who was in Edinburgh ! said her husband would fix it when he got back from work. No one came went down rang bell Male owner knew nothing about TV's and had not been told either ! We are very disappointed and we were charged £141.00 would not recommend and would not return. The owner did give us a parking permit as our daughter was coming from Manchester to drive us home. Also we were told we had to be out by 10.30 not 11.00 as you stated. Mr & Mrs Reid

Really enjoyed our stay and only have one small negative comment. It would be helpful if television reception could be improved, ie by use of satelite or cable. It was impossible to watch on one evening.
