I can't believe that I was suckered into making a reservation at this hotel! I went by the four star ratings of the two others who stayed here. My standards aren't that high, but this place was just ridiculous! It is in a small town outside of Charleston, WV, off the beaten path. The pool was empty, the place was rundown, there are people who live here full time and have boats and other broken down cars in the lot. The room itself was very worn out, it had bugs flying around in it. I was afraid to let my children in the room, so I didn't. The guy working the desk was friendly, but the environment was full of smoke. The check in is a building all to itself completely separate from the three separate buildings of hotel rooms. We went to a rundown Shoney's way up the street and came back and asked for a refund. The guy was suddenly not nice anymore when I asked for one, and then I thanked him, and he wouldn't speak to or look at me. Who in the world would stay in a dive like this? Shame on cheap tickets for even having them on their website. We stayed in a sleep inn in Wilmington, NC that was a cheaper price than this and a lot more quality!

It's an old motel, large and well placed beside the Kanawha River, but desperately in need of fixing up.

This was an older hotel, fairly clean but just an older building with wear and tear in the bathroom fixtures and carpets. However, it is right on the river and there are picnic tables and a gazebo by the water's edge. Nice scenery from that side. Desk clerk was friendly and let me make a long-distance phone call because the cell towers weren't working because there had been a bad storm there earlier. There's lots of restaurants around the area, but unfortunately some seedy stuff like tattoo parlors and "adult" clubs, but thankfully not real close to the hotel. It felt pretty safe around the area right around the hotel. Also, the maid was already knocking on my door at just before 10am, an hour before checkout time. In addition, free wireless internet was advertised, but I only got about 25 mins of connection time before my computer unexpectedly shut down. I think the wall plug was bad but not sure. But when I rebooted I was never able to get online again - no signal. This could have been due to the storms, though. I still have to do some work while on vacation and I wasn't able to get some things done because of this. But for the price it's a good deal - if I ever pass thru that area again I'd likely stay there again.
