Surrounding Location:
Belfast is a beautiful waterfront town in the heart of Midcoast Maine. It offers both a rocky coastline and acres of rolling countryside. Perfectly situated on the Penobscot Bay, Belfast offers a variety of activities on the water as well as scenic views, from colorful lobster boats to sailboats and yachts. Kayaks and canoes are also favored pastimes.

From the 1700-1800s, Belfast enjoyed an active shipbuilding industry. During this time, shipbuilders, sea captains, and merchants build beautiful Greek Revival, Colonial, and Victorian mansions. Many of these homes are now historic landmarks located both in town and along the coast.

Belfast today offers exceptional art galleries, quaint antique stores, and even its own live theater troupe, the Belfast Maskers, who present plays throughout the year. The downtown area is wonderfully walkable, with shops, boutiques, museums, and restaurants. Downtown even offers one of the largest health food stores in the area and a Farmer's Market on Fridays, from early May to mid-November.

The weather in Belfast is temperate and enjoyable, in the summer months. Visitors enjoy the warm, sunny days and cool, clear evenings, particularly in July and August. By September, the fall foliage is magnificent as the weather gets a crisp edge while remaining sunny and pleasant.

In 1996, Belfast and Midcoast Maine received a GEMmy award, presented by the Mid-Western Travel Writers Association to honor our area as an "exceptional travel experience - a travel 'gem'". We hope that you'll visit Belfast and see for yourself how special this area is.
