I have stayed at this wonder hotel twice. The second stay was rather unpleasant, not because of the room or the food, but because a very large gathering of unruly young people had booked the on-premises convention center (the largest in San Jose), making quiet evenings in the hotel lobby impossible. This convention croud had also fully booked the main restaurant for all meals -- it was off limits to hotel gusets. Before booking here, I recommend that you phone the reservation desk and make certain 1) that there are no large conventions booked during your stay and 2) that the main restaurant is open to hotel guests. The restaurant: Excellent food and atmosphere. To save on meal expenses, order off the menu, do not go for the buffet. You will have to ask for a menu when you enter the restaurant -- if won't be offered.

The Barcelo San Jose Palacio is a very nice 4 or 5 Star Hotel, it is very close to the airport, and they have a shuttle that will pick you up from the airport with advance notice. There are 4 restuarants in this hotel. If you forgot any essentials like tooth brush or toothpaste, they provide it. The staff is friendly and nice, The hotel has 4 restaurants, 1 american with breakfast lunch and dinner buffets, prices are reasonable, 1 Japanese with ok food and too high prices, 1 Italian, did not eat there, and another I cannot remember. The hotel has swimming pool, Tennis court, beautiful gardens, and very friendly and helpful staff. You can exchange your dollars for Colones at the hotel, the exchange rate is good. They have a concerige staff to help you book any of the Volcano tours or any other tours you want. I saw aconcert at the Teatro nacional, which they booked for me. There is also a spa, jewelry store, convenient store in the hotel. It is in a very safe residential and business part of town. The hotel has a airport shuttle, so you can make a reservation 24-hours in advance to be picked up from the airport, and take you back the day you are departing.

Sushi restaurant. Smoking room, unhelpful, hard to find. Bad experience.I went to check in and let my husband park, no bell person was available to help with luggage. Made us park and walk all the way around the hotel to provide husbands passport before could check in. Because he was not allowed to wait in front of hotel. Very unhelpful. Gave us smoking room with no choice. No explanation on amenities.

Warmly greeted at the front counter. Remember you are on CR time so things move a bit slower than in US. The Buffet was EXCELLENT...I ate there every night and was thrilled with the choice of food and ice cold beer. I felt comfortable and safe while walking through the beautiful gardens day and night. Wouldhighly recommend getting a room toward the back of the hotel by the pool front rooms face the highway. The Casino leaves a lot to be desired but it's safe and clean, except for the smoking allowed! The pool is well maintained and very clean. The food service is also great there. I have high standards and they were met at the Palacio.

Great service, delicious very affordable priced food including the room service! Everything you would need is included in the room from tooth brush to robe and slippers. Tour desk in the lobby with helpful staff and great prices. The pool area is small but with so much to do it's perfect for relaxing.

"For the most part this hotel is nice. It has several restaurants but everything is overpriced. The staff is okay but definitely not overly friendly. The rooms and lobby can use some updating but they are still suitable. Staff does not greet you when passing in the hallway and certainly don't provide that ""is there anything I can do to help"" attitude. Food was not bad but not great. Good things-Large, clean hotel room. Hotel workers are always cleaning. San Jose is VERY expensive-you should go there for the sites but don't expect cheap deals on ANYTHING"

Great location, beautiful garden, the staff for some reason not so friendly I was the one greeting must of the time, room was clean the only thing they need to replace the mattresses, came back with a lower back pain,

Easy access to freeway. It was dated horribly. I woudl stay here again. I liked Tabacon Resort where I stayed on staurday. I need comfort and appeal. This hotel lacked both.

My sister and I came for spring break. We didn't spend that much time at the hotel. The staff was nice enough, although many did not speak english. It was too cold and windy to really enjoy the pool. The food was good.

Beautiful pool area. Restaurant for individual ordering closed too early. Hard mattresses. Beautiful hotel. Restaurant and gift shop employees did not speak much English. Could not call USA with phone cards - no 800 number access from this hotel - it was a problem.

"This hotel was 15 minutes from the airport. I was surprised at how spacious and beautiful the rooms were with unique central american woods and decor. Service requests were a little slow, maybe typical in this part of the world."

The hotel has very good amenities and the staff was friendly. There were some small things I did not like. For instance, the ice age it took for me to check out. The room appointments were great, bathroom excellent and the location is ok if you have a CAR at your disposal. However, for walking guests there is nothing (interesting or essential like restaurants, cultural attractions, etc) near the hotel. For me this was a draw back because I like walking and exploring. Back to the room I had a wonderful view, etc. The only draw back was that the bed was not as comfortable as it could have been but i am peculiar. The buffet was excellent one of the best I have experienced in Costa Rica both for breakfast and dinner. However, the speciality restaurant Italian was terrible. Service slow (30 minutes for a salad?) and the main dishes over cooked, trashy, and taste less. Overall though for the business traveller this a good place to stay.

The whole facility was first-rate. Problem with accommodations at check-in. The hotel was great. The suite was fabulous and the staff was very accommodating.
