The grounds were immaculate and extremely well kept. Landscape was beautify, the picture of paradise. If you want a resort with a nice beach then you can't do much better than this resort. The pools were huge. The buffets were O.K. but the a la carte resturants on the resort were very good. There are 4 or 5 a la carte resturants and they give you tickets to go to 2 of them. If you want more you have to pay 15.00 extra but it's worth it because the food is good. Make reservations for them early because they book up fast. The rooms are clean and up to date. The servers, waiters, and housekeeping are very courteous and accomadating. I have read many bad reviews about this resort, however my stay was GREAT. Remember this resort is huge. It is made up of 5 different resorts grouped into one large complex, so if you don't like walking don't stay at this resort.

Traveled Sept 10-17 with 3 couples. My 4th trip to Playa del Carmen. Been all over Carribean and I truly believe this area is one of the greatest values around. The beach at Barcelo Maya Colonial was the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Turquoise water with fish at the reef you can wade through. Arrived at end of hurricane ike so water was too churned to enter w/o stepping on rocks the 1st 2 days. tried going in and stepped on a sea urchin - that hurt. But after weather calmed was fantastic. Lots of chairs in sun and shade. Staff was very nice and accommodating. Room was good but damp. Cant help that much. frig was never cold enough to drink the Modelo in it. Beer at pool bar was never very cold either but service was great. The buffet was very good. Really entertaining at Japanese restaurant. The shopping at the liitle village there had better prices than shopping in Playa del Carmen. They even had a Catholic mass on Sat & Sun evening at resort outdoor church but it was mostly in Spanish. Only bad thing was drinks were really not all inclusive. At piano bar they charged even for a Jack Daniels & coke, considering this to be top shelf. At Riu Palace I never paid anytihing for top shelf. After ordering the bar manager told me that if I didn't want to pay for it, it would come out of the server's pay because she was new and didn't know policy. This upset my husband very much and I know he won't return on principal of the matter. That was truly the only downside. Awesome place with perfect service besides that matter with the drinks. Lots of iguanas on property.

It was our first time to Mexico and an all inclusive. Everything was wonderful from the grounds to the hotel service. The beach had very few rocks and not far from our hotel. Would highly recommend this resort , can't wait to go back!!!! The Barcelo has somethings for everyone.

This was our offices second time going to this resort for our annual office trip, and it just keeps getting better! Even with some initial trouble at check-in, our stay was amazing. The staff handled the problems quickly and was very accommodating. The rooms were clean and the grounds were beautifully manicured. The buffets offer something for everyone, and the a la cart restaurants are DELICIOUS! I highly recommend the Italian restaurant, Capri. I love the fact that anytime you pass a staff member in the hallways, they always say ?Hola!? to you. Even if they only do it because they have to, it is a nice touch and made me feel very welcome here. Make sure to check out the ?loud pool? for lots of fun daily activities like pool volleyball and bingo! If you?d like to shop more than just the mall and shops that are on the resort, you can take the ?collectivo? Evening entertainment is great, there are shows every night and a rockin? disco on site. We went at the end of May, and there were no bugs, a HUGE plus! Overall, you can?t beat this place, it has everything you could ask for at an affordable price!

We traveled to Mexico in October and had a wonderful stay at the Colonial Barcelo resort. We have traveled to many all inclusives in Mexico and the Caribbean and we really liked this one. The property is beautiful, rooms were very clean, staff was attentive and helpful. The beach was beautiful! Great snokeling we saw lots of big fish and rays. It was nice to have more than one resort to go to and several restaurants to pick from. While we were there they were just finishing construction on the new Barcelo Palace Resort. Next year we plan to return and stay at this property. You can't go wrong with this resort. There is something for everyone!

The trip was a well deserved and needed trip for my wife and I. The Barcelo was a great choice for our anniversary. The beach and pools were outstanding. The snorkeling right off of the beach was great. I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone. A few tips: Learn spanish, I could see that it would have helped here. Take a direct flight if possible. The connection coming down almost killed our vacation. We found that the Airlines, Delta at least, could care less if they ruin your trip. Pack lightly, at this resort we spent most of our time in our bathing suits. Bring one $ bills, everyone has their hand out and expects a tip.

If you are going on vacation with anyone under 18, this is the place! The kids will not get bored - there are too many things to do! The best part is that they are free. The kids club for 4-12 year olds has lots of activities. There are pool tables, a foose ball table, and air hockey near the pools for kids (and adults) of all ages. The water park with 5 or 6 slides will keep kids entertained for hours. There is an archery course and minature golf. The snorkeling is wonderful - sea turtles swimming right off the beach! We never even had enough time to check out the sea kayaks and tricycles. Take cash with you. If it starts to rain, there is pottery that you can buy and paint. They will fire it for you. Honestly, the only drawback is how hard the beds are, but I have traveled to various places in the Carribean and the beds were all this way.

My boyfriend and I went in May of this year for a friend's wedding and had an amazing time. The resort is close enough to everything needed. 1 hour away from Cancun airport, 30 minutes to Playa del Carmen (shopping, restaurants, bars). The food was really good for an all-inclusive. We stayed at Beaches in Varadero Cuba and the food was much better here at Barcelo. Loved the swimming pools, they were all connected - almost like a lazy river. Nightly entertainment was ok, definitely not a huge reason why we liked the resort so much. On-site disco was really fun though. We are going back this May again and can't wait. We had a great time and would highly recommend this place to anybody,

"2 middle aged parents and three 20/21 year-olds. We all thought it was a beautiful and relaxing place. The dive shop guys were outstanding. The rooms were clean and spacious. Although we were there 8 days, we were happy to just hang out - they have lots of hammocks. The beach is great. Snorkeling off the dock is good. Only sad thing is that the reef is dead or dying near the hotel - as a result of a severe hurricane a few years ago. We did go off site to snorkel and dive in the cenotes - underground caves --an unbeleiveable experience."

We've stayed in the Beach, the Caribe and the Colonial and will be staying at the Tropical in summer '08. This resort is great - lots of space, amazing beaches. Employees are very polite and always friendly. Food is very good. Repeats in the buffets but so many choices you don't have to eat the same thing twice. Tepanyaki restaurant was our favorite.

"The resort and beach are beautiful, we took 4 teenagers and had a ball. The Mayan Adventure Snorkel Tour is definitely worth going. We got to see a barracuda, stingrays and a sea turtle. Go all out and take the bar tour to Playa Del Carmen, you'll have the time of your life. The whole trip was wonderful!!!"

This resort was awesome. The buffet was great and the staff was very nice. Night entertainment was good and the pools were beautiful. This was a girl's trip but I am taking the kids this summer.

"Gorgeous beach, and well maintained and clean grounds. Opened in summer of 2006. Nicely laid out to make use of natural features and to try to have an open feel. The staff was consistently friendly and attentive, and the food was so varied and much better than we expected. There are lots of activities, if you want to be active, but you can get away if you just want to be alone. So everyone can be happy. The resort is Spanish-owned, so expect a cosmopolitan vibe. We were very very pleased with our 3 nights here. "
