After 7 years in a row this is still our favorite November vacation. We travel other places during the other months but of all the resorts in Mexico the Barcelo is top notch for what we need while on vacation. Lots of beach chairs, good selection of food, lots of wildlife (iguanas, sea turtles, sting rays, coral, tropical fish...)This is not party central but offers a relaxing break from our hectic work lives. Trip number 8 in November 2009 is being booked!

We dream of going back everyday. We have been to this resort two times. Only one we have been at in Mexico. Quiet-not really a party resort-but we do have fun at the bar. We just go as a couple but kids would be fine too. Not a ton a children but facilities are available. Nice onsite shopping, access to excursions, lots to eat-maybe not super gourmet but unlimited choices, several restaurants, our favorite is the burger shack and bar by the big dock on the ocean. We are into walking the beach which is sandy and very long. We also love to snorkel-the resort has 4 properties in a row so you can snorkel a huge area-we can snorkel for 5 hours at a time and still have more to see. Lots of fish, turtles a 4 foot sting ray, coral, urchins. Not a lot of shelling on the beach like Florida areas. The beach has lots of activities and organized group dance etc. if you like that. Rooms are clean and decent. We like the private balcony and fridge in our room. We are not fancy people but hate crowds and this one does it for us. Huge pools with very few people around them. Swim up bars, weddings to watch, several bars-we like to visit the tequila bar for great margaritas-all included. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Always happy to hep with whatever. They may not speak english but someone does-can you imagine having to take drink orders in 5 or more differnet languages-they are all amazing. Lots of Italians, canadians, americans and more. Hour ride to the hotel from Cancun. Great place without the crowds-snorkelers dream.

One of the worst weeks of my life, service was really bad, I request a none smoking and got a smoking room and the answer to my complaints was "let me get the ashtrays out", really a very cheap hotel, I will never get back to it, I rather stay at the "secrets or royal hideaway or Ritz Carlton" I go every year never going to get back I rather stay at a Hotel 6. One point on them beach is great.

We originally booked our stay with the Colonial Barcelo resort but when we arrived we were upgraded to the Palace Barcelo resort! The 5 resorts are side-by-side so it is very easy to visit the other resorts. The resort grounds are immaculate!!! The food was amazing! The ocean was beautiful! Great snorkeling! (1hr free) The restaurant staff were very friendly! The French restaurant is a must (you have to make a reservation so do so right away). Tons of pools! Temperature...hot and humid! always reapply your sunscreen. The club (disco) is pretty good for a hotel run club. Excursions: Chichen Itza (the ruins) is an amazing excursion and well worth the money. Our trip included transportation, lunch at a local small restaurant, visiting a cenote and the ruins! Save your $ for the bartering at the ruins as there a tons of locals selling jewellery, carvings, blankets etc. Playa del Carmen....great shopping! If you want great but cheap local mexican food make sure to visit "El Serape". Rio Secreto...another must! Included was transportation, a locker, lunch and a beautiful tour with a guide in the underwater caves. Although you can not take a camera down with you, they do take professional photos for you (1- $25 printed, 4- $60 on a cd etc). If you have claustrophobia it may be a bit much...I have mild claustrophobia but I was fine.

Very few english speaking staff members. Buffet okay, but could be better. Bed hard as a rock. This is a very large resort. Takes a lot of walking just to get from your room to lobby, bar, food, etc. Does have a great beach and pool. Very clean. The property is a long ways from Playma Del Carmen and Cancun. Do not tip. I found that I was the only guest tipping and my service was no better.

Written by a well-traveled, global vacationer. Went in late April, 2008. Hotel complex is outstanding (we were in Maya Beach, but other hotels looked equally well cared for). Grounds meticulously maintained. Number of things to do or beach chairs to do nothing whatsoever in- amazing. Pools are huge, clean and always inviting. Quality, variety and quantity of foods left us gob smacked. Can't comment on quality of adult beverages, but needed nothing more. Service in all areas was outstanding- helpful, timely, and efficient. Beach sand a bit rough with coral rocks about, but beautiful long-stretch with excellent snorkling mere feet from the sandy shores was exciting. We saw many types of sea life as well as living coral less than 100' from our beach chairs. Nightly live entertainment (no extra cost) was of a high quality and every night featured a different show with good casts. Another favorable aspect is that this hotel chain seems to have embraced eco friendly practices wholeheartedly. There are many aspects of the property that show they are trying to do their part to dimish their negative impact on the environment. Negatives would include: rooms with adjoining doors add to noisy hotel factors, beds are hard, but feather beds on top of mattresses made them more comfortable, smoking in a lot of public areas (but no smoking areas always available), there were quite a lot of kids around even for a non-school break time, and we didn't get the type of room we requested (king bed, no adjoining room). We had serious issues with a warring, drunken couple in room above us, but management was quick to respond, very apologetic, and they eventually moved us. All in all, a wonderful time was had by all (that would be two adults).

My family just returned from visiting Barcelo Maya Beach resort. The place is outstanding, the grounds are beautiful and well kept. The pools are great, we spent alot of time there. They have basketball and ping pong tournaments to keep kids busy. While the overall service is great the people work really hard to make sure all your needs are met, they are very slow in responding. Our bathroom toliet backed up and it took them 4 hours to come to our room, after we called and went to the front desk 3 times! Otherwise everything was great, they clean and mop your room twice a day and keep everything really clean. We will definatley visit Barcelo again.

Our small family (2 kids) has been fortunate to have some "big" vacations interspersed with our more local vacations over the past few years: a Caribbean cruise, a trip to Hawaii, and this vacation to the Maya Riviera. This was our first experience at an all-inclusive resort and I think it was our favorite. The Barcelo staff were friendly and helpful. I loved the beaches, the landscaping, the food, the activities...everything met or exceeded our expectations. I prefer this type of vacation to the rigid structure and timelines of a cruise. We were pretty active but it seems to me that there is something for everyone here- from the nonstop activity/adventure junkie to the chillin' by the pool for a week chaise lounge potato.

We had a 4-night stay in February for a pre-wedding trip since we're not going on a honeymoon after we get married. It was beautiful and we've decided that we're going to go to celebrate our anniversary every 5 years. Pros: The staff was wonderful, always wanting to please, the rooms were great, the pool bars were AWESOME, the food at the a la carte restaurants was delicious, the beaches were beautiful and there were so many activities and non-motorized water sports to do that we felt we didn't even have to leave the resort. We thought we might feel trapped, but there was so much to do, it didn't matter. Also went on the snorkeling excursion. Costs 40 USD, but TOTALLY worth it. Cons: The beds aren't very comfortable and the buffet food is just ok -- also, be prepared to have a little tummy issues, no matter where you go in Mexico.Tips: if you want to take out a hobi (mini-catamaran) and you've never done it before, schedule a free lesson. Make dinner reservations for your a la carte restaurant the day you get there. Make sure you have a ride to the airport when you leave. Be prepared for "Mexican time." 30 minutes always means 1 hour, 45 means 1 1/2 hours. If you ask them how long it takes, know that they might not be totally accurate.Have a great time! We did. You will be completely satisfied.

Everything was clean, good service, large new rooms, wonderful pools and beach area. Beautiful scenery, palm trees, hammocks, plenty of seating. Food was just ok at buffets. French restaurant was very nice and so was the seafood rest. Could not get the Japanese Rest. It was sold out before we even arrived with a long waiting list. Disappointing. The complex is made up of five hotels and is huge(but beautiful). If you want cozy try something else. The oldest two are currently closed and the beach area in front of them was almost completely deserted. You had to walk to the far end of the closed section to get any rentals. We were at the Palace and it was very far away. Nice walk though. Event schedule and shows were difficult to figure out. All in all we loved the place and would recommend it to families. We traveled with three girls 14, 12, 11 and they loved it!

Part of the complex was closed due to lack of bookings but that was okay because it got us bumped to the top tier. There were a lot of weddings at this resort! There were at least 2 every day we were there, which led to a lot of families taking up a lot of room in the bar areas. The restaurants were over booked due to part of the resort being closed. The pool was absolutely beautiful in the Palace, it was huge and you had plenty of room. It was nice to be able to walk all along the beach throughtout the complex on a nice walkway.

We had an incredibly good experience with this hotel. One always wonders wiht these all inclusive plans but the hotel and service were flawless. The food was excellent in any of the buffets or the restaurants. Checking in and out was fast and easy. The staff responded very quickly and diligently to any of our requests. The beach is abut five minutes walking, but you are likely to need some exercise after all those excellent meals. The hotel is beatifull and extremely clean. The only minor detail was the air conditioner in our room, which seemed to be barely enough to be comfortable. This was not a problem but a bigger or better air conditioner would have been a plus. I would recommend this hotel to anybody wihtout hessitation.

I stayed here for an entire week with my boyfriend. Although we went on two excusrions during the time we were there, but in actuality there is enough to do there that the excursions weren't necessary. The snorkeling at the hotel beach was more amazing than the snorkeling excursion we went on! I would recommend this hotel to anyone!

Having stayed at a few all inclusives I found the food to be one of the best at the Barcelo Colonial. Sometimes it was difficult getting drinks at the bar by the pool. Grounds are beautiful, well kept. The staff in general was not the friendliest. There were a few who seemed genuinely interested in helping and/or serving you while others didn't really care. We stayed at a Barcelo in Punta Cana and felt the staff there was much friendlier. Far ride from the airport.
