Personable staff. Clean room and the right size. I did not expect to pay the extra twenty dollar property tax fee which is not shown in the ad.

great location for access to Union square and China town. The room was great but unfortunately was also right next to the elevator which was REALLY noisy and was still going even at 4:ooin the morning. Instead of asking for another room, I wore ear plugs that worked just fine. I guess you do get what you pay for.

Excellent location, comfortable, and clean. Very noisy construction just outside our window. Attractive hotel close to tourist attractions, shopping, dining, financial district, transportation. Helpful staff. Comfortable, recently renovated rooms and bath.

Great value hotel in a superb location 1-2 block from Union Square and the Cable Cars and right next to the gate to china town. Staff were very friendly and efficient and gave some excellent restaurant suggestions

I stayed here alone in Sept. 2008. Location is excellent just 1 block from the China Town Gates. Just a short walk from the Hyatt (2 blocks) where you pay 3 times as much. Another hotel that is more expensive is just across the street. Note: the hotel is old and Sept/Oct. are the warm months. At night the room was a little warm but the ceiling fan was in good working order and knowing the temps would be warm, I mailed myself a box with a small fan I could point into the bathroom. I was comfortable. Ups: Price! Location! The staff is delightful, very kind, helpful, doesn't accept tips. The comforter and pillows are either down or the best fake down ever. Very comfy. The remodel was very nicely done, the room safe exactly holds a laptop in width and more in height. It's a very good safe. The door is locked after 10 p.m. and you use an outside key but the staff mans the desk and knows the guests so they buzz you right in. It feels very safe even at midnight and alone. Downside: No air (but if it weren't the warm months, it wouldn't be an issue); the beds are only doubles so small; the elevator is slow, slow, slow and the only ice machine is on 1st floor down the slow elevator. You could pay a lot more and have more luxury but you would not be treated any better.

Clean, very comfortable rooms, friendly front desk staff. Location was excellent...access to everything within walking distance. An excellent value compared to typical SF hotel prices I have paid previously!

Location was great. Elevator was old, slow and hot.

Some of the rooms in the Baldwin Hotel are alongside an alley that is used for garbage collection and storage of recycling bins. If you like sleeping with the window open, be prepared to hear glass being disposed off by the various bars/restaurants very late at night. These recycling bins are picked up every morning around 6:00 AM(except weekends), requiring 2 or 3 trucks to back-up (with the typical beeper echoing in the alley) to collect the contents of the bins. The end of the alley is a facing a parking garage (typically 1 or 2 car alarms seem to go off spontaneously each night). It takes a few nights to get used to this. For the rest the hotel is fine. Complementary coffee is available til late at night.

Reception area is a mess and there is a huge hole in the wall for computer cables making a first impression. The smell in the room is quite strong. Chemical over something worse, perhaps. Regarding noise, you're in a city and noise is to be expected. No more than usual, perhaps less than usual, and with the window shut and the ceiling fan on, it's fine. Unfortunately, with the stench, having the window shut is a challenge. Bathroom is very clean and new. Bed is good. This is a little hole of a place, and I am pleased to be writing this review from the room after forking over an additional $ for internet access.

Great hotel at a great location, and good value for the money although parking is extra but that's standard for the area. Nice, clean rooms. Close to everything. Of course, it'a little noisy since you're at the center of it all.

My husband and I stayed at the Baldwin Hotel for 6 nights, and it was an excellent stay. The bathroom was very nice, and provided shampoo, conditioner, body soap and facial soap. We requested an extra pillow and it was at our door within minutes! The staff is excellent here. The room was basic, but, as others here have stated, in San Francisco, you aren't going to be staying in your room much. The Baldwin couldn't be in a better location. There is very little street noise at night, and we felt extremely safe here. The hotel doesn't offer breakfast, but there are fabulous restaurants within walking distance. I really liked Posh Bagel, which is located just around the corner on Sutter. There is also, of course a Starbucks three doors down from the hotel. There is complimentary tea and coffee in the lobby. San Francisco is a beautiful city full of friendly people, gorgeous ocean views, excellent restaurants, and joi de vivre to spare. We will definitely return again and again to this magical city, and to our beloved Baldwin Hotel.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how neat and clean this older hotel was! Even the paint seemed new and the tile grout was sparkling! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the neighborhood felt fine for a single female to be in. It was about 1.5 miles from the pier. My only complaint was no air conditioning, which normally doesn't matter in San Francisco but did that night. :-) Excellent value for the money, so long as you don't mind an older basic hotel. I will definitely be staying there again!

I have been on a trip to SF at a scientific meeting and this hotel near Moscone Center mostly because it is inexpensive. The hotel is located in 10-15 minutes walk from Moscone, near Chinatown. The area has plenty of shops and food places and seems safe at night. This hotel is probably OK for the money, however there are issues: 1. Not very responsive stuff. When I checked in, no one was at the front deck and the sign said will be back in 5 minutes. In fact, I waited 12 or so minutes until the clerk was back; 2. VERY old and noisy elevator. I used earplugs (fortunately, I had them) so slept moderately well. However, I have heard the elevator even through the earplugs! 3. No cafeteria or restaurant was on premises. 4. No coffee maker in the room. So if you need a place just to sleep (as I did), eat outside and bring earplugs with you, this hotel is fine.

The location of the hotel was nice. Room was OK. Not very modern. Kind of old looking. Some modernization but not much. Hotel was clean, staff was friendly. Cosmetically was needing something on the room side of things. Maybe free wifi would help too.

The room was barely comfortable. The worst part was that the hotel is located on a garbage truck route. At 4 to 5 am every morning the trucks would roll down the street picking up the trash from the commercial buildings in the area. The trucks pick up the trash with the use of machanical arms that are run by air pressure, which means noise the from the air compressor could wake the dead. IT WAS TERRIBLE!

I stayed at the Baldwin Hotel on a Friday and Saturday night. I was very pleased with the value for the room. I stayed in a two Queen bed room, which although small, had a spacious bathroom. For the location, which is right in the center of Union Square, the value is great. I am looking to stay here for my future stays in San Francisco. It is not fancy, but clean and very close to nearly everything in Union Square.

Pretty good deal. The hotel lobby had a bad smell! I would spend about 65/95 a night for a hotel like this.
