Nice but a bit priceyNice hotel but they do tend to charge quite a lot given the location. The restaurant has delusions of London dining with consequent London prices but food is OK rather than great.

Brunell would have been impressedWent primarily to view and photograph the magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge. Could not get closer than this and what a fab hotel. The terrace bar area is brilliant and the views stunning you can almost reach the bridge. A walk across the bridge is a must for everyone and the parkland area above it provides spectacular views of the Avon Gorge and the bridge itself. I had quite a photofest.The food in the restaurant is excellent if rather pricey. The meal for two cost as much as the accommodation but was top notch and the service excellent. If there is a better setting for dinner it has to be extraordinary. All in all a brilliant stay and highly recommended.

Excellent value for moneyI was a little worried about comments left about the hotel but i shouldnt have been. I have always booked the Avon Gorge view rooms and they are excellent. The rooms are huge, there are all the facilities you need and the view is spectacular. Yes the bathrooms could do with updating but you can live with them. A flat screen TV would be nice but is hardly essential and for the money I paid through laterooms and having stayed at most of the hotels in this area because of work i can truly say this is the best value for money and the breakfast which was included was excellent.

One night in BristolThe Hotel was a refreshing change from the usual chain hotels. A real key for the door, real people working in reception and individual attention.Whilst the decor is a little faded, the place has real character, and the location couldn't be improved upon.I will definitely be returning.

My ReviewRooms a bit jaded but OK. No mini bar/fridge working. Family room for 4 and so expected 4 proper beds, one of the beds was a very flimsy camp bed - not what we expected. Initially told on Saturday at 6.20pm that we could not have tea/drinks on the restaurent veranda - a stroppy waitress told us - the veranda was empty at the time. Later a man said it was OK. Breakfast was good and efficient service. Suspect it plays on its position but overall good comfortable hotel. Friendly Receptionists. Shame no parking.

Lovely location, good food, over-worked staff.We got a very good deal for the weekend which included a £40 allowance for the restaurant. We were also able to upgrade to a very nice room with a good view of the gorge for only £9 a night extra - well worth it.The evening meal was excellent - definitely recommended, though not especially cheap.It seems a popular venue for wedding parties and was very full.The staff seemed overworked and one of the receptionists only appeared to have limited English.The hotel has apparently had a facelift about 18 months ago as well as a change of ownership.

A nice surpriseHaving stayed in this hotel before some years ago, it was pleasing to see how much it has improved since then. We had a huge room with spectacular views of the suspension bridge. It was obviously being refurbished in stages but that didn't matter - it was very comfortable and provided a most agreeable base for a brief trip to Bristol. The food was excellent, the staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. We shall certainly stay here again when we need to be in Bristol.

Bristol's Best Views Bristol is very expensive even on late rooms for a quality hotel at a reasonable price. I have never recommended a hotel before but the Avon Gorge Hotelis the first. Book a roomwith a gorge view and you won't be disappointed. The restaurant was great food and atmosphere, with outdoor heaters!!!!

Nice views but very noisy. This hotel came highly recommended and it is in a very scenic setting with great views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge from the restaurant, terrace and some rooms. However, we were very disappointed with our stay. We were allocated a first floor room, with a village view, unfortunately close to the lift and function rooms. There is obviously no sound-proofing, as the noise from people in the corridor & the vibration of them walking along the floor was very disturbing, as was noise from the room above. They were not shouting - only talking & moving about. When we finally got to sleep we were woken up several times. Friends staying on the other side of the hotel were disturbed by noise from outside on the terrace as well.The room was rather small, but serviceable. The bed was comfortable & the iron very useful. The ceiling fan in the room wobbled like mad & looked like it might bring the ceiling down so we switched it off rapidly. The bathroom was a bit tired and tatty. The shower was very very hot & had to be operated on the coldest setting possible to make it bearable. Housekeeping staff did a good job.The car park is down behind the hotel, a limited number of spaces marked out on a very narrow dead-end road that is very steep. It is pitch black at night as there is no security lighting and was covered in broken glass when we were there.Breakfast was OK, but there was a definite lack of the correct cutlery & crockery. We had to keep asking for spoons, a knife, a side-plate etc. The hot food was reasonable but did keep running out & you had to wait for it to be replenished.We left feeling tired after 2 noisy & disturbed nights. We had to clear away a lot of broken glass (thankfully not from our car) before we could move our car & vowed never to return. A disappointing stay.

Great LocationWe got a deal on laterooms for this hotel and paid £85 for the night. We had a twin room overlooking the Avon Gorge and the suspension bridge with the bar/restaurant terrace beneath our window. The room was tired and in need of refurbishment, especially the bathroom which was well below par for £85. But the location and included breakfast more than makes up for the room and it's that which makes it value for money. Easy parking right outside the hotel entrance on a saturday evening was handy. Plenty of local bars and restaurants in Clifton - although a bit pricy. The included buffet style breakfast was good, again with views to the bridge and gorge. We will be staying again.

Excellent hotel, excellent locationThis hotel was good and reception area welcoming. We had a problem finding it though, the hotel tat is depsite AA directions and those from hotel. We spent ages going all over the area looking for it and signs for the actual hotel at road junctions would have been useful. Car parking was also an issue although we got the last hotel space underneath. It was Easter Sunday so we ate in hotel which was good. Breakfast also excellent. Drinking area next door obviously hugely popular and we thought it a nice place as well with many different people using it. Our room 232 was so quiet-never stayed in such a quiet room and I especially liked the bathroom decor-not often bathrooms are given much attention

Location, location, location - the Avon Gorge Hotel 2 nights in Clifton BristolThe hotel could not be better placed in Bristol and the terrace would take some beating anywhere on the planet as a place to hang out for a drink,food or just to stare at the gorge and bridge.However, I think the hotel rather leans on this in other aspects. The terrace is the reason most people are there and prepared to part with large sums of money for frankly shoddy food and shaky service. We were told the food would take forty five mins at least to arrive so bought (expensive) crisps to keep the kids going. Food arrived 15 mins later. The nachos we had were just a congealed mass of tasteless cheese somehow holding together a cold plate of dry tortilla chips - six quid for that was obscene.We did use the main restaurant for the saturday night and without going into detail over a series of plain incompetence by the staff and kitchen had a very ordinary meal. It was reduced in price by removing the kids meals due to the wrong meals arriving but still came to a ludicrous £81. Two courses and two small glasses of wine for that was just beyond silly. We live in London and go out a lot so this was a real surprise. Don't expect it ot be any cheaper because it's not London, but this is taking advantage of the location angle a bit much.Hotel room we had though was great in every way. well arranged and very comfortable.Definitely would want to go again but not go near the restaurant. Clifton is full of lots of places that though possibly expensive won't be such a shock and a surprise.

Good hotel in a great locationBooked through late rooms and got a great price. On arrival received an upgrade to a suite which was great. The decor was a bit out of date and the 70's spa bath didn't want to work which was disappointing. Overall though the room was very comfortable and I would recommend this hotel for a short stay in Bristol.

Turn back the clock.For someone who spends most nights of the year in hotel accommodation the Avon Gorge Hotel is an oasis.The Hotel a little jaded in parts, has a that feeling of an old fashioned hotel combined with moderness that brings it into the 21st century. The staff were on the whole very helpful, the food was excellent. I would like to see some investment in the quality of the furnishings in the hotel room but apartment from this, my stay was excellent and I would go back again.

Overall a good experienceThis is the second time we've used the Avon Gorge for an overnight stay in Clifton, and we've been very satisfied both times. First time they mistakenly put us in a double instead of a twin. They were v apologetic and upgraded us to a twin room with what must be one of the best views in the hotel. Second time we were asked if we had any preferences re room location and found ourselves in the room next-door! Staff always polite and helpful. Breakfast good without being outstanding. Yes some areas look a little run down but the LateRooms prices make the hotel good value--by UK standards anyway.

90% there!Large family room with two proper beds for our boys (age 7 & 12). Only gripe is that the attached pub had no space for lunch (when we arrived) and the staff at the pub whilst I appreciate were extremely busy were not at all helpful (queued for 15 mins to be told at the counter there was an hour and a half wait). Saying that don't let the attached pub put you off as whilst it was busy until past 10.30pm any noise was minimal and didn't interrupt our sleep.Parking is a bit of a nightmare but after driving around the block we found a space in the next street which has no restrictions.

Avon Gorge Hotel - 14th March 2009We are reasonably local to Bristol, so we have often visited the area around the Clifton Suspension Bridge and like the pubs and restaurants nearby. So we made this booking for our wedding anniversary and thought it would be a good opportunity to stay over and not have to worry about driving home.Our first disappointment was the check-in staff, who we can best describe as ‘functional’ i.e. they booked us in and explained everything, but we didn’t feel like valued customers. The next disappointment was the room, we were upgraded to a family room due to the lack of double rooms, but unfortunately the room was right next to a very noisy lift that clunked and clanked all through the night. The third disappointment was the bed, which could only be described as a loose collection of worn springs held together with bed linen.Have to admit we were very disappointed with our stay, this hotel can best be described as tired and worn and I suspect that the only reason that it stays in business is the close proximity of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the stunning views you get from the windows.
