this hotel was closed on our arrival. orbitz had ample opportunity to let me know before i lugged my luggage up the driveway. my husband has a bad back and had to do the same. we were transferred on foot to avalon grand. pretty place but upon arrival was informed that my booking was not all inclusive.they also charged us for tequila after we paid to be all inclusive. i have booked ten trips to cancun online, i am not convinced that i was in error in booking. it is unlikely that i will book with orbitz again or stay at an avalon resort. my review is for avalon grand.the gym closes at five, lobby bar closes at 11, pool bar closes around 4. not much later evening social opportunities at the hotel. there is only one restaurant open but i will say the food was quite good.

The hotel is quaint and I actually enjoyed the decor. Something different from the typical resorts. And we knew from reading some reviews that there was no elevator. We can use the exercise. HOWEVER...at check in the bellman was nowhere to be found and while we saved tip money it was a long trek up to the 4th floor schlepping bags. Thank goodness we pack light (saving room for the tequila we had to take back, lol). Then the toilet stopped up. We had to call every day of our stay to have it plunged. Now they knew that room had plumbing problems before we got there. Fix it before renting it out again. The hotel is older but they need to close it - renovate - and reopen with it up to par with the Avalon down the street.

Actually stayed at the Avalon Grand. The Baccara was having water troubles so they upgraded us to a hotel next door. Still great place to stay, very friendly staff.

It is not what it seems in the pictures. Pictures look beutiful! NOT. Are room was pretty dumpy and we had a suite!!! My parents room was located on the 5th floor (no elevators) by its self next to a broom closet??? The staff was not helpful what so ever. Beach front was not even accesable and the entertament was cheesie. I have been to cancun before and was a great time. This trip was terrable. Spent all of our time outside of the resort. Sorry Avolon but Im not the only on that thought this way, every other guest there was also complaining about everything. And they really only have one pool with pool bar. The rest of the bars and all the restrants where at the avlon baccara Grand which is at least a block down the road!!!! To really top it all off travel agent messed up our booking and didnt give them our all exclusive info. Spend two days of our vaction trying to figure it out and no help from travel agent or The Avolon. And now we have a lawyer!!

The location was excellent!! Right downtown, easy to take buses, next to shopping centers and many restaurants. Only received 1 bottle of water for entire 8 days and 1 small pack of coffee. Beds are very hard!! Price was fair, only spent nights sleeping there. Not much of a beach.

We booked a 2-bedroom suite in August for a December trip. On arriival we were told that our rooms were not available and we would be accommodated next door at the sister property, The Avalon Grand. We specifically chose the smaller Avalon Baccara for its Mexican decor and size. We were given a very nice (but very plainly decorated) 2 bedroom suite on the 4th floor (with no elevator). We had to climb 4 flights of narrow winding stairs each time we returned to our room. I definitely got the feeling that we were the victims of bait and switch. For a hotel with only 27 rooms, it seems to always be available to book on Online Travel Website. I guess they know they can always send them next door. I would definitely not book again at the Baccara or the Grand because I feel that we were deceived.

Nice setting overall, great view of the ocean, but no beach access. Away from all the noise of bars/clubs, but close enough to nightlife that we could walk to it or take the public bus. The bus was actually great, took us downtown, to other beaches and the ferry/bus terminal. We went to the main bus terminal, called "ADO", and purchased really cheap rides to Tulum and to get the airport shuttle....so much cheaper than a taxi!! The room was clean, but the shower drained really slowly and the bathroom always had the faint smell of sewage...which my husband says because the don't have modern plumbing with a "P-Trap"?! Anyways, we encountered this in other hotels in Mexico..just keep the bathroom door closed. We also got a lower level room, and the room above us had a balcony with a jacuzzi, which drained onto our balcony...very annoying and couldn't sit out there a few times..the staff just kept cleaning up the water and put a bucket under the drain- which was an o.k. solution, I would have rathered they changed our room, but they were booked. Overall, good for the price...remember you are there to enjoy Mexico, so it doesn't make sense to spend alot of money on a room that just needs to be clean and safe..which this provided.

First let me start by saying, the staff was extremely nice, but the accomodations are what are most important, especially when traveling with children. First the beach was closed, so from there it was just not going to be a pleasant experience. i enjoyed the old world charm of the hotel and its atmosphere, but the rooms do need to be repainted, retiled, etc, i think you get the point. The beds are horrible! cant' stress that enough and there are no elevators, so wear comfortable shoes. We checked out on the third morning, we needed a hotel with beach access for our girls or it would have been a long and miserable experience. But as I said before, the staff was very very nice, so we left not because of them, but because of the lack of beach access.

the avalon bacarra is great! I have stayed there acouple times before and always get the same great service. the only thing i would change from the hotel is the matresses they are very stiff but they do offer a foam cover to put over it which helps a bit. the customer service is great at the bacarra. i recommend this hotel to anyone.

We have been to many beach getaways, but few can compare to our latest adventure. First and most importantly, this hotel is not the typical huge resort that is found in the hotel zone. It is rustic, charming and the staff there could not be friendlier. From the front desk to Juan our pool bartender, everyone was truly glad that you were staying with them. We did not do the all inclusive plan, but decided to eat at the restaurant one very rainy evening. We had the place to ourselves and everything from the sushi appetizer to my duck breast, was great. We are very picky about our dining experiences, so take it as a fact ...this was good food, prepared well, severed by our attentive bartender/waiter in a pretty location overlooking the ocean. (the A/C was not working that evening)Now that I've mentioned the ocean, I have to tell you our only disappointment... there is no beach to speak of. On all but our last day, the ocean waves came right up to the sea wall. This is a problem all along the coast and not limited to just this hotel. Appears hurricane Willmar wiped the beach away 2 years ago.

Avalon Baccara is a beautiful and charming hotel completely unique. It is a converted villa so the scale is tiny. Avalon Baccara looks and feels like it is in Mexico, but with all the comforts and amenities you would want. Highlights are the beautiful white sand beach with crystal blue water and the swim up bar in a lovely shallow swimming pool with gorgeous tile mosaic design including a grotto with a waterfall. The views from the beach facing rooms are gorgeous, but even the lagoon facing rooms are a treat as they provide a stunning sunset every night.

Walked in walked out. The hotel was not what we expected according to the reviews which are very misleading. The hotel is old , musty smelling and did not look clean. Furniture in the room looked like it was falling apart while the bed looked as if it belonged in a dormatory. The only good thing was that the hotel manager offered us accomodations in their sister hotel (Avalon Grand) two doors down for a few dollars more. The accomodations at the Avalon Grand were far superior than the Avalon Bacarra. T

The staff was friendly as usual but it was really disappointing. We stayed in a standard room. The spa was a hole in the group, out on the patio, covered in tile. It looked very old and unsanitary. There are no windows; the walls have the think foggy tiles that you see in showers. That?s how you get light into your room. There were no curtains so we could not dim the room during the day. We stayed one night and changed hotels the next day.

we wanted a quit and intimate hotel and that's what we got, very clean the staff was very friendly and at our service from the minute we walked in.the hotel is an older mexican style which we loved. the pool area faces the beach which had a spetacular view. the sand area on the beach is narrow but the beds and hammack toped the romantic private beach we were looking for. we will stay again and recommend this hotel. the area was very safe and had a security guard just about every corner we turn.

I wanted to get waway from the big Cancun hotel scenario and stay at a quaint smaller property...This is exactly what the Baccara is! Room 405 A will leave you with a wonderful view, nice size balcony with a hot tub and sore legs. You have to climb three flights of stairs to get there but is is deffinately worthwhile when you do. It's all stairs folks so be prepared for that if you do stay at the Baccara. Room 403 is the other best choice if you plan on staying at this hotel. CONS: Stairs, no blackout drapes in bedrooms, small beach, minimal food options, Jacuzzi's usually dont work but do have good hot and cold running water. PROS: Specific rooms mentioned are incredible with wonderful views and a feeling of privacy, kitchenettes, nice quaint small property feel. If you want something low key and want a unique old world feel suite feel for a low dollar....this is a great choice....considering all said in this review. If your looking for small, quaint, private and unique try the baccara but you got to get one of the rooms I mentioned or it just wont be the same.

"If you are looking for a small, intimate hotel this is the hotel for you. We stayed in one of the honeymoon sweets, and it was wonderful. We had a great balcony with a spectacular view of the ocean. We did the all inclusive, so we had access to everything at the Avalon Grand which is a very short walk from the Baccara. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a little older, but in a classic Mexican style which we really enjoyed. Beds are hard which is common in Cancun. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would definitely stay at this hotel again."

The Avalon Baccara @ Cancun was the perfect hotel during our stay. We ended up with the best room of the complex right on the very top of the hotel in the middle. We had a patio overlooking the lagoon and also the Caribbean sea. Our room was tremendously large and clean !!! The bathroom was a bit small but that didn't bother our stay. The hotel staff were helpful but could be a bit more attentive. The location of the hotel was great, right on the beach !!! Bus stops nearby, shopping malls were a walking distance and couple of places to eat nearby as well. The only complaint I have with this hotel is that, there's no elevator. But then again, considering all the food we ate it was a good idea to just walk up and down the complex instead of taking an elevator. The Avalon Baccara @ Cancun is a great place to stay.

We had a great time over spring break with our kids -so much so that we decided to return a month later without them. Beautiful property -better staff. We felt pampered and well cared for. We'll definitely return
