I booked the Mansard room (top floor)with breakfast but got a room on the fourth floor with no breakfast. This room was very dated and a poor attempt at a hotel room. After querying this, I was immediately given the room that I had booked with the breakfast. The new room was very modern and clean. No complaints here. This hotel was probably once a very beautiful and stylish hote, but has lost most of its glory. The hotel is about to undergo a refurb in Feb 2009 and will probably be quite sepctacular after that. I would consider staying here again after the refurb. Breakfast was acceptable. Slightly off the main Bund area.

An excellent hotel which I would thoroughly recommend. Lots of character, good value for money and within easy walking distance from the Bund. Staff friendly and helpful. Wonderful.

in this hotel you can not find any tranquility and quiet place.if it needs some fixing it's better to close that floor for convenience of guests

excellent spacious historical hotel-very good value for money.not near the metro was its only disadvantage but easy and cheap to get taxis in shanghai.Would definitely stay again

The Astor House is a must for a stay in Shanghai. It has history, character, charm and excellent rooms. Billed as the most luxurious hotel in the Orient when it was built in the 19th century (every bedroom had its own bathroom) it has been completely refurbished but without loosing its historic features such as spacious rooms with timber floors and stained glass windows in the stairwells. It has a lift but there are about 4 or 5 steps to get to the lift lobby. The dining room has an excellent Chinese menu but be prepared to dine early, I arrived at 8.30 p.m. to find it closing up. The English breakfast in the coffee shop is a curiosity, ham & eggs and a 'side salad'! The staff do not speak much English. It's location near the Bund is excellent. It may be hard for an airport taxi driver to find so make sure you get the name written in Chinese characters by someone at the airport. Allow lots of time to get a taxi back to the airport, Shanghai's traffic is awful. I'd stay here again.

Hotel was in a great location. Easy to get to the Bund and close to the ferry to cross to Pudong. Handy for the Nanjing Road shopping areas. Breakfast was top class. I understand some of the rooms are being renovated. Best get one of the executive rooms until the renovations are completed. Exec room was top class. Staff very helpful and friendly. Would definately stay here again.

The location would be great and very near the Bund except that there is no easy way to walk to there or Nanjing Road area. It was very difficult to get a cab in front of the hotel at certain times of the day. The hotel decor and ambience is very unique and fun.

Executive rooms are spacious and very well equipped. Free internet, complimentary water, fax, ironing board. Lovely, luxurious bath with seperated tub and shower. Some of the deluxe rooms are huge, and give very good value for money. Good location with regard to the Bund, 3 minutes by taxi. But a bit away from other locations, although easily reached by cab in 10 minutes. Interesting history told by pictures and other information on the walls. This is where an electric light first was turned on in China! If you are interested in Shanghais history over the past 150 years, this is definitely the place to stay! Good value for the money, too. Interesting

for anyone interested in the old colonial buildings on the Bund this is the ideal location as the Bund is within easy walking distance. The Astor House Hotel is the oldest western hotel in China and retains the charm and style of the grand hotels of the past. The breakfast in the main ballroom must not be missed. The rooms are spacious with modern bathrooms. Service is excellent.I loved the hotel.

Lovely hotel with character. We chose this hotel as a change from the typically modern chain hotels. The room was enormous and the breakfast excellent. It was easy to get a taxi from outside the hotel to see all the sights. I would recommend this hotel highly and great value for money

It might not be the most luxurious hotel any longer but the atmosphere is amazing, and as soon as the pedestrian bridge is in working function again, you cannot beat the location at the beginning of the Bund.

Room was very good but with a baby cot it is a little small and I would recommend going for the more expensive Executive room which is 40 square metres. Hotel staff very obliging and breakfast was good. Room is a good size but because of furniture (desk, couch, king size bed) when adding a cot, there's not a lot of space left!

The staff are efficient and friendy, the Hotel has a great history dating back to 1846...such celebrities as Charlie Chaplin, Bertrand Russell, President Grant and Albert Einstien have all stayed at the Hotel...well worth a visit...the breakfast is excellent...

A historic hotel dating to 1846 which we picked because we prefer places with character. Most of the hotel is old style with a feeling of the 1930's. However our room on the 2nd floor was fully updated and vey good. Only problem was road noise in the early mornings. A short walk to the top end of Bund it is well placed although only limted local restaurants in the immediate area. Currently tghe area being upgraded for the 2010 expo when the loctaion should be even better.

A beautiful old style hotel with a lot of character and history (it was the place to be seen back in the 1930's, so a lot of 'identities' such a Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein have stayed there). Rooms were very large, clean and functional. Down side is that service is overall poor - staff friendly when you directly approach them, but otherwise don't acknowledge or assist 'unprompted'. Another downside is that major construction work is being carried out next to the hotel at the moment (we had noisy work starting at 5.00 am and continuing through to 11.00 pm.) This work is building a road that will pass by one side of the hotel (and be quite noisy!) Great staying there for the nostalgia, but would not stay there again or recommend to a friend.

Beautiful ambiance. Well remodeled. The breakfasts were rather ordinary, and the construction in the neighborhood made access difficult. Nonetheless, when you finally got to the Bund, after a 3 block detour, the location was great. Because of the proximity to the river, there is a breeze. We had an executive room, which was very nice. Bellmen are helpful, concierge for the executive floor was helpful.

A very nice and traditional hotel in the heart of Shanghai. Good value for money. Very large rooms and a nice breakfast.
