Mediocre and poor value for moneyThe details of the hotel stated that the bathroom had recently been refurbished but unfortunately this was one of the weakest showers I have ever experienced and there was no hot water before about 9.30am. The cold tap on the sink was loose almost to the point of coming off. The room itself was OK but there were sweet wrappers and empty milk containers on the floor of the interconnecting room with bunk beds. The mattress on the double bed has just about reached the end of its useful life - you could feel every spring and I only weigh 56kg! Definitely not worth what we paid and wouldn't use again.

Price paid at the [your website] rate was very good, at normally advertised rate would only have been given "average". Astor is an old building with lots of character and with staff who very clearly work hard to please. In terms of comfort; we were happy with our double room however our son found his single room noisy and the bed not particularly comfortable. We would certainly stay there again.

The staff on reception were very cheerful and helpful. Staff at breakfast could not speak english and it was difficult to get seved. Had the feeling the staff there were not happy....Carpet on the top floor corridor needs to be renewed. Water was cold in the bathroom. If you left the water running for about half an hour it did come through hot eventually.Workthat was being done in the road beside the building was very disturbing. ***Early morning call requested by my son in room 301, was delivered making him late for a very important parade at the Royal Marine base in Bickley. This caused him much grief.

This hotel is a little old-fashioned in terms of decor but otherwise is absolutely fine. It had a good, modern shower. The mattress was very firm but I like that. The TV has freeview so a good range of channels. The hotel is near the sea. The full English breakfast was also very good.

The staff in the hotel were friendly, welcoming and very helpful. However, we had to complain about the cleanliness of the bathroom - this was rectified very quickly.

Recept/lift carpets un-hoovered since our last visit more than a week prior. Staff great. Room far too hot, pictures awful, bathroom xcellent, bed comfortable, Breakfast fine, but sunday dinner roast was warmed-over lunch joint. A work in progress and making strides since last year, will be excellent.

Hotel was easy to find and there was parking available on the street outside (cost £2.50 per day). Staff were excellent and room was very good value. Disappointed with the breakfast. Service ended at 9.30 and we arrived for breakfast at 0850. We had to wait for a table to be laid as did other guests - many tables were empty but hadn't been relaid. The cooked breakfast was tired looking - no sausages, dried beans etc. We asked for more sausages and when they arrived they were undercooked. Bacon however was tasty. Staff were very helpful but it had the feel of breakfast service coming to an end - 40 minutes early!

Generally poor- My son did the search & told me he had found a hotel normal price £160 per night for only £79 - what a laugh!! no way was this a £160 room. The bed was solid, there was mould round the window, with its resultant 'tang', TV only had the 4 standard channels & no freeview as stated in the room guide. No flannel provided - first time we had gone away without taking one! Limited car parking was supposed to be available, it was there was room for 2 cars! Breakfast was really dissapointing, Juice, cereal, tea/coffee ok - cooked items poor, cold & limited. Location was very good & right next to the 'Hoe', not so perfect for the town centre. I would not consider staying here again.

It would be helpful to have a description of how to find the hotel on foot from the train station. Also, for the price it would be nice to have something extra other than the 4 poster bed in the room such as a jacuzzi (I realise this is in the bridal suite but clearly that won't be suitable for everyone). other than that the service was good and the staff were very friendly.

This is the worst hotel we have stayed in for years, the dirt in the room and public areas was amazing. It is so out-dated. I wish we had never gone there, it ruined our holiday.

This was a nice hotel with friendly staff. Parking was an issue but we were aware of this in advance so were not disappointed. One problem was a loud mechanical noise which kept us awake for long periods. I suspect it was the hot water tank filling or such like but from our room the noise was almost unbearable at times. Other than this it was a very nice clean hotel. Would stay there again but probably not if I had to pay the normal full room rate.

I found the staff to be very courteous and attentive and the hotel bright and clean. It is obvious that there has been investment in keeping standards high. My room was a little on the small size for a double with the wardrobe a bit dated, but I have to acknowledge that I booked late and it was a very busy week in Plymouth with people travelling in to watch the firework competition. I have found that generally hotels in Plymouth are slighlty more expensive than in other major cities: in this respect the Astor is no exception. I did, however, manage to find the one curdled UHT milk mini-carton on the tray. Apart from that I left well fed and well rested, and that's the main thing. Thanks.

Just a couple of things - one, don't pay any attention to the photos posted here - they are of the two bridal suites and absolutely not representative of the decor of the hotel as a whole. The booking form promised us a 'recently refurbished room' and whilst that was true of the bathroom (which was brand new) in the first room we were offered, the rest was pretty dire. We asked to see another room which was slightly more modern and brighter, but not 4 stars. Two, you'll be asked to pay on arrival, which is rather unusual these days. So it's not a bad idea to ask to see your room first, then pay if you're happy. All this said, the staff were very helpful and friendly, didn't object to my declining the first room etc etc. It's perfectly placed and close to the city centre. Breakfast is a buffet which was rather awful (there some alarming-looking pink sausages) but again, very polite service.

Lovely hotel, had a free upgrade to a suite upon arrival which was a lovely suprise, the room was great however, the water pressure on the bath taps/shower was a mere trickle and thus took a considerable amount of time to fill the bath. Also, I didnt feel there was a great deal of choice at breakfast, although the food was good, it was slightly too much trouble for one head waiter in particular to fetch some fresh hot toast!!! Fantastic location in Plymouth though, easy access to town/barbican. Parking on street as hotel carpark full/reserved by other guests, however, reduced carparking fee available at hotel reception. Overall, would recommend.

It is very well situated right near the Hoe but in a quiet street.Staff were very helpful and friendly.
