Applegarth HotelI thought this was an excellent hotel. Beautifully and stylishly refurbished, but at same time down to earth and friendly. Really lovely food too. Would definitely stay there again. A Gem, basically.

ApplegarthApplegarth is a four star hotel so I was surprised to find that there was no snack service only between the hours of 5-7 in the evening. If you book into a 4 star hotel you would expect everything provided, if then you have to keep going outside for what you need what is the point? On reading the hotel description again I note the provision of dressing gowns - I could not find one in my room or the complimentary water. I did not know of these provisions until I re-read the info on line so if mentioned at the time the owners may have provided me with these things. I was disappointed with the food. The first breakfast included scrambled eggs which for some reason tasted awful - it was put on top of the fried bread which made that soggy and the sausages were the cheap frozen type. The next meal was steak - which was very nice. My room was nice - lots of facilities and clean. To be honest I got the impression the owners were a little defensive about their hotel etc so I did not mention the breakfast at that time. All in all not a bad hotel I am sure many people will enjoy its facilities etc but I will not be returning.

They say that guests have an access to Parklands Country Club... And they do, no problem about that. However, the name 'Country Club' is very much misleading as the facilities would rather belong to a council gym. Also the weblink points to another Parklands Country Club which is upmarket and based in Glasgow!!

Lovely hotel. Obviously recently refurbished. Nice classic decor without being stuffy. Staff all very helpful. Delicious food in the Restaurant. Room was very clean and comfortable. The hotel is small enough to get to know the staff but large enough to offer more than a guest house. Overall a great place to stay to explore the hills. Great find!

The hotel is lovely--nicely restored/maintained, with lovely woodwork and stained glass. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were fine. I ate a \"snack\" one evening that was mediocre, perhaps reflecting the slower season and challenges of supporting an extensive menu.

A lovely hotel in a great location. I could only book a single at the time of booking and was concerned that this may be a problem but the room was great and the bed a \"mini double\". The very attentive staff kindly helped out with an early breakfast as I needed to leave first thing in the morning. I look forward to coming back again

I had a wonderful stay at Applegarth. It is a beautiful old building, only a short walk from the railway station, and my room was a delight. The food was delicious, and everyone there so very friendly.
