Almond Casuarina is on Dover Beach at the South end of the island. The resort gardens are beautiful. The food is excellent. The staff are friendly, courteous and helpful. Bajans have a laid-back attitude, so guests have to relax and realize that things will get done eventually and appointments and reservations are quite often off schedule. Traffic on the island is crowded (Barbados has the 2nd highest car per person ratio in the world). Off resort activities are expensive but definitely worth doing. The current is fairly strong on the South beaches. Much calmer on the West of the island. We spent 2 days at Almond Village Resort on the West for better water sports. Almond guests can shuttle for free between the 3 resorts on the island.

While the gardens, pools and beach were beautiful, the lack of on-site amenities, limited dining options and poor service in the restaurants marred what was supposed to be a spring getaway for my family - so much so that I'd never visit again. And the requirement of making dinner reservations and only one day in advance was a pain in the [*]... (at other resorts, there's always at least on buffet-type restaurant) that's why I booked an all-inclusive resort - to not have to worry about those details! On the plus side, I did enjoy the Rum and History tour, and the island tour.
