Great hotel in a great location

Spacious public spaces, refined decor, and comfortable rooms. Difficulty with wireless network, but that was all. The Adagio was a wonderful surprise. Do not judge a book by it's cover. While the exterior is well kept the surrounding area may be a bit overwhelming for the novice traveler the San Francisco. Once you open the front door your experience will be enhanced and you will be pleasantly pleased with the warmth, comfort and feel of the hotel. The staff was professional, courteous, and very helpful. The manager was AWESOME and took care of all of our needs. Registration was simple and painless. We walked a short distance from the elevator to our room and found it clean, well decorated and appointed and containing a number of amenities including flat-screen TV with cable and video gaming paraphernalia and a small stereo CD player with wonderful sound quality. The king sized bed was very comfortable as were the pillows and bedding. We really enjoyed ourselves at the Adagio and would stay there anytime, it was WELL worth the money.

Exceptional service, especially from the front desk staff. Would stay here again.

Spent 3 nights at the Adagio, thinking that I might find a gem in the jr suite. The lobby is great, and the room was large-especially for SF and Union Sq. But, the details don't quite add up to a top boutique hotel. The rooms are clean but not spotless. Hoousekeeping was very late everyday-one day arriving past 4pm! Towels were harsh, but plentiful. Decor was nice, but in need of updating. Windows open, but only 3 inches. Room had AC, but via a loud portable unit. . One front desk employee was very very helpful talking about non touristy good dining options. Another front desk employee was frazzled and too busy to help. Yes, they have Ipod docks in the rooms, but no cables to plyug them in. They offer teh NYT in the lobby, but only about 2 copies so get there early! You get the idea....nice hotel, but not great. The details fall just short enough that when you add it up, you have to really examine if its worth the price. Location is good a few blocks from Union Sq, and the size of the room IS worth something...But is it worth enough? I would say as a boutique hotel, the Adagio is average. Which to me means when compared to big chains or lesser hotels it more than stacks up. But when compared to other 'higher' end small properties, its leaves something to be desired.

Overall, hotel staff was pleasant and courteous. Clean, good size room for a couple, in the city. A little noisy at times, you could hear the neighbors doors slamming closed whenever they entered or left. Valet service wasn't all that great, we had to wait almost an hour for our car on departure. Price for daily valet was great by booking through orbitz. Close to Union Square, a lot of great places to dine, shop, and theatre.

Excellent room decor; Bell Captain did great in fixing our room situation. Room was not good.

Location is EXCELLENT, right in the middle of Frisco. Staff friendliness is superb. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed due to a flood and we were not able to dine here. According to the many reviews it’s one of San Francisco’s best. Consider that this is an old building, a boutique hotel, no central heat or A/C and better stay on a high floor due to disturbing city noises.

For our family of four - two adults and two teens - we searched for a room that offered two queens rather than full size beds and found that at the Adagio. There was a slight mixup - perhaps due to the fact that we called them to price match with an online discount website - that we first got a room with two doubles (although the package was called the Executive Queen/Queen). When I called down the front desk was initially a little rude, but later moved us into a queen room and offered an apology gift. That was classy. Just keep in mind the possible bed switch. The lobby is beautifully decorated as are the rooms - modern design, updated furnishings, down blankets and pillows. The shower head was pathetic. More like an angry garden sprayer rather than soothing rain. The weather was cold and we used the slightly noisy wall heater which warmed the room well. It's a couple of blocks from Union Square - an easy walk. Just three or four doors down are a small grocery store and also a convenience store. The refrigerators are large and the bellman offered to empty it out if we wanted to store more food. The walk to Union square takes you on an obstacle course of pretty assertive homeless people asking for money, but that's downtown life and could be considered part of the whole experience. There is a bar and restaurant off the lobby - we only used it one morning for breakfast - it was fine. Overall we found the hotel clean and quiet, the staff helpful, the atmosphere safe. We would stay again...it was a great price for the location.

Each year, my husband, sister and myself visit my daughter in San Francisco, and stay at a different 4 star hotel. The hotel location was convenient as promised. The staff and customer service was excellent. The rooms were small and I would not classify the hotel as 4 star-there is none of the opulance one experiences with a 4 star--especially the bathroom--it was truly only functional. The decor was nice-not what you would expect of a 4 star.

Ambiance and the view Smaller rooms than expect, but not too small. This was a very pleasant experiance. I would go back here. The room was smaller than expected for an executive suite, but general it was wonderful. The room had a great view of the city and the lobby was beautiful. The staff were very friendly, even by San Francisco Standards. It was also incredably close to Union Square and a 10 min taxi to Fishermans Wharf.

After a lot of Internet research, we chose this hotel for 2 nights during a 1-week visit to SF. While expensive, we stayed here during weeknights at a lower rate, and went other places on the weekend, when rates here were much higher. Everything about the room, and the entire hotel, was very comfortable. A few minor problems (bath sink did not drain, room staff was too early in the morning), but the comfort outweighed these minor inconveniences. We returned for another night at the tail end of our vacation. Only possibly real issue were 2 mistakes in room charge billing. I would recommend that you stay here. But carefully review room charges.

Here for business, I wanted a good night's sleep, and this hotel delivered. Big firm bed, quite room, and I was in heaven. One complaint: the bathroom fan was so loud that when on, I thought there was a jet engine in my room. Outside the room, the hotel was swanky, but I didn't spend much time there - too busy.

Location, gym, hotel bar. Cleaning staff was not the best. They had to be told to replace our towels although we placed them in the bath tub per the hotel.

A well placed property providing excellent service - staff particularly cooperative and friendly which overcomes any short coming re ageing of facilities. Restaurant was a bit of a worry though. Mike & Cleo Haine . Sydney

"We were amazed. We were in San Francisco on one of the warmest days of the year so far, and the room had NO AIR CONDITIONER!!! When we, in our disbelief, called the desk, the clerk's reply was something akin to 'what do you want me to do about it?' The manager called the room and tried to smooth things over, but it was too late. Is there such thing as paying over $* for a hotel room with no air conditioning as part of the basic operating plan????? We left immediately"

Some of the other reviews worried me about the size of the room, but I was pleasantly surprised. The room was a very good size, with a large bathroom. I had plenty of space for my bicycle and its travel case. I was disappointed that the restaurant was closed during my stay, but they are many fine restaurants within a few blocks. I will definitely stay at the Adagio on my next visit to SF.

Nice old world hotel. Neighborhood is a little cheesy. Good place to stay in San Francisco. Old world architecture, narrow corridors, ample rooms, Sophistication without pretentiousness.

I thought this hotel was excellent in it's price category. Centrally located, the hotel was clean, the rooms well appointed and the staff friendly. The bar and restaurant were also very good. I would happily stay here again.
